  1. 1. Amphiphilic Peptide Interactions with Complex Biological Membranes : Effect of peptide properties on antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects

    Author : Shalini Singh; Martin Malmsten; Per Hansson; Debora Berti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : LPS; Antimicrobial; Peptide; Inflammation; Infections; Liposome; Binding; PEG; Farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : With increasing problem of resistance development in bacteria against conventional antibiotics, as well as problems associated with diseases either triggered or enhanced by infection, there is an urgent need to identify new types of effective therapeutics for the treatment of infectious diseases and its consequences. Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory peptides have attracted considerable interest as potential new antibiotics in this context. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functional importance of estrogen receptors in the periodontium

    Author : Daniel Nebel; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Estrogen; Estrogen receptors; LPS; Periodontium; PDL cells; Gingival epithelial cells;

    Abstract : Östrogen är ett kvinnligt könshormon som även har andra effekter. Östrogen verkar i cellkärnan genom att binda till en östrogenreceptor (ER), som finns i två olika typer, ERα och ERβ. Parodontit (tandlossning) är en inflammationssjukdom som drabbar tandens fäste som svar på bakterier som normalt finns i munhålan. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biomolecules at Interfaces -Studied by Surface and Solution Techniques

    Author : Anna Bergstrand; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LDL; sepsis; PEG; LPS; lipopolysaccharide; QCM-D; SPR;

    Abstract : The interfacial behaviour of biomolecules in general and proteins in particular is interesting from a biochemical point of view since proteins are involved in processes such as complement activation, blood coagulation and atherosclerotic plaque formation, but also in the context of biomedical applications such as solid-phase diagnostics, therapeutic aphaeresis and biosensors. The objective of this thesis is to study biomolecular interactions using surface sensitive biosensor techniques such as surface plasmon resonance, SPR, in combination with bulk techniques. READ MORE

  4. 4. Platelet activation and tissue factor release in hemolytic uremic syndrome

    Author : Anne-lie Ståhl; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hemolytic uremic syndrome; platelets; tissue factor; LPS; Shiga toxin; complement system; factor H; clusterin;

    Abstract : Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a clinical syndrome characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. There are two subtypes: typical HUS associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and atypical HUS associated with uninhibited activation of the alternative pathway of complement. READ MORE

  5. 5. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    Author : Katherine Jakubs; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Abstract : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. READ MORE
