  1. 16. Titrating Open Lung PEEP in Acute Lung Injury : A clinical method based on changes in dynamic compliance

    Author : Fernando Suarez Sipmann; Göran Hedenstierna; Hans Hedenström; Stefan Lundin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; PEEP; open lung; recruitment; dead space; electrical impedance tomography; ARDS.; Medicine; Medicin;

    Abstract : The recognition that supportive mechanical ventilation can also damage the lung, the so called ventilation induced lung injury (VILI), has revived the more than 40 year long debate on the optimal level of PEEP to be used. It is established that the prevention of VILI improves patient outcome and that PEEP exerts protective effects by preventing unstable diseased alveoli from collapsing. READ MORE

  2. 17. Lung Function, Respiratory Muscle Strength and Effects of Breathing Exercises in Cardiac Surgery Patients

    Author : Charlotte Urell; Margareta Emtner; Elisabeth Westerdahl; Hans Hedenström; Agneta Ståhle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breathing exercises; Cardiac surgery; Deep breathing; Lung function; Oxygenation; Physical therapy; Positive expiratory pressure; Spirometry; Respiratory muscle strength; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Background: Breathing exercises are widely used after cardiac surgery. The duration of exercises in the immediate postoperative period is not fully evaluated and only limited data regarding the effects of home-based breathing exercises after discharge from hospital have been published. 3. 18. Mesenchymal heterogeneity in the adult human lung

    Author : Måns Kadefors; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lung; Extracellular matrix; Adventitia; Fibroblast; mesenchymal cell; Alveolar epithelial cell; Fibrosis; Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis; Mass spectrometry; RNA-sequencing;

    Abstract : The human lung is a complex tissue consisting of a heterogeneous mix of different structures and cells, each which a specific role that together contribute to the primary function of the organ: the gas exchange. Different mesenchymal cells populate the interstitial areas around airways and blood vessels and form the connective tissue together with the extracellular matrix. READ MORE

  4. 19. Airway inflammation in "healthy" smokers. Relation to lung function and high resolution CT findings

    Author : Ann Ekberg-Jansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; smoking; bronchoalveolar lavage; bronchial biopsies; cytokines; lymphocytes; computed tomography; lung function; respiratory symptoms;

    Abstract : The aim of the present study was to characterize the inflammatory pattern in "healthy"smokers and relate it to lung function, high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) findings and respiratory symptoms in order to identify smokers at risk to develop COPD. Subjects were recruited from a population study "Men born 1933 in Göteborg". READ MORE
