  1. 11. Studies of the tumor-vasculature interface : role of TGF-beta 1-induced epithelial to mesenchymal transition

    Author : Mei-Fong Pang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tumor metastasis is a complex multistep process. Among key steps that occur during metastatic spread are acquisition of tumor cell motility, intravasation of tumor cells into blood or lymphatic vessels and extravasation of tumor cells at distal sites. However, the precise mechanisms that govern these metastatic steps remain elusive. READ MORE

  2. 12. Molecular mechanisms of VEGF-mediated angiogenesis and vascular permeability

    Author : Anna Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Angiogenesis; VEGF; vascular permeability;

    Abstract : Angiogenesis, sprouting of new capillaries from pre-existing blood vessels, is a tightly regulated multi-step process. One of the key mediators in this process is the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Many tumors express high levels of VEGF and pathological angiogenesis is considered a hallmark of malignant tumor growth. READ MORE

  3. 13. Molecular and Biological Characteristics of Stroma and Tumor Cells in Colorectal Cancer

    Author : Jingfang Gao; Xiao-Feng Sun; Richard Palmqvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carcinogenesis; genetic alterations; colorectal cancer CRC ; cysteine-histidine rich protein PINCH ; Inflammatory infiltration; Angiogenesis; lymphangiogenesis; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Carcinogenesis is a progressive process involving multiple genetic alterations in tumor cells and complex interactions in the tumor-host microenvironment. To better understand the contribution of molecular alterations in tumor cells and stromal variables to the development of colorectal cancer (CRC) and identify prognostic factors, in this study we examined the clinicopathological and biological significance of stromal variables, including particularly interesting new cysteine-histidine rich protein (PINCH), inflammatory infiltration, angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, as well as hRAD50/hMRE11/hNBS1 proteins and hRAD50 mutation in tumor cell in CRC. 4. 14. The cytolethal distending toxin of Haemophilus ducreyi. Prevalence and effects on normal cells

    Author : Liselott Svensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Haemophilus ducreyi is a fastidious Gram-negative bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted disease chancroid. The disease is endemic in many developing countries and occurs as restricted outbreaks in the industrialised part of the world. READ MORE

  5. 15. The role of VEGF family in angiogenesis, tumor growth and metastasis

    Author : Xiaojuan Yang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Tumor growth is dependent on angiogenesis, and cells in tumor tissues produce various angiogenic factors to induce neovascularization. Among tumor-derived angiogenic factors, members of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family are most frequently and highly expressed in various solid tumors. READ MORE
