21. The B lymphocyte in Staphylococcus aureus arthritis
Abstract : Joint infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus leads to heavy synovitis and rapid destruction of bone and cartilage. Permanent loss of joint function is seen in 20-50% of the patients, despite early eradication of the bacteria with antibiotics. READ MORE

22. Factors regulating lymphocyte development and peripheral activation
Abstract : Peripheral tolerance is regulated by different types of regulatory T cells, including CD1-restricted T cells and CD4+CD25+ regulatory T (Treg) cells. This thesis has focused on the interactions between T cells and antigen presenting cells (APCs) and the immunregulatory function of TGF-b as two important factors regulating differentiation and activation of T cells in the periphery. 23. Molecular dissection of B-lymphocyte signalling using expression profiling
Abstract : Gene expression profiling and bioinformatics have emerged into playing a large and diverse role in many aspects of both the clinical and molecular research. These two approaches have in this thesis work been used in combination in order to shed light to the role of Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) in B-lymphocyte development and signal transduction. 24. Chemokines and Integrins in Lymphocyte Development and Localization
Abstract : The small intestine contains a large number of T lymphocytes within the single-layered epithelium that separates the gut lumen from the lamina propria. These intraepithelial T lymphocytes have potent cytolytic and immunoregulatory capacities, thought to be important for fighting infections, neoplastic growth, and sustaining epithelial integrity. 25. Human cytotoxic lymphocyte differentiation in health and disease
Abstract : Cytotoxic lymphocytes, comprising natural killer (NK) cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, eradicate infected or malignant cells by release of lytic granules and alarm the immune system through production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. NK cells and CD8+ T cells belong to different arms of the immune system, employing complementary strategies for target cell recognition. READ MORE
