  1. 21. Inflammation-Induced Gene Expression in Brain and Adrenal Gland

    Author : Linda Engström; Anders Blomqvist; Tomas Hökfelt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; brain; adrenal gland; stress; lipopolysaccharide; interleukin-1; Neurobiology; Neurobiologi;

    Abstract : The autonomic nervous system serves to maintain a constant inner environment, a process termed homeostasis. Thus, in response to the homeostatic challenge posed by infectious agents, the autonomic nervous system answers to signals from the immune system and elicits adaptive physiological and behavioral reactions. 2. 22. Inflammatory Signaling Across the Blood-Brain Barrier and the Generation of Fever

    Author : Anna Eskilsson; David Engblom; Annika Thorsell; Göran Engberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Fever is a cardinal sign of inflammation and is evolutionary conserved. Fever is known to be beneficial during acute inflammation, but over time and if very high it can be detrimental. READ MORE

  3. 23. Neonatal respiratory control : inspiration, inflammation and the prostaglandin E2 pathway

    Author : Veronica Siljehav; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Immature or deficient autonomic control is a common problem in infants born at a premature age, and is of central importance in apneas. The pre- and perinatal development of the brainstem neural circuits that control autonomic functions is vital for survival after birth and for the regulation of breathing movements. READ MORE

  4. 24. Eicosanoids in cancer : new therapeutic targets in neuroblastoma

    Author : Agnes Rasmuson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cancer is one of the most common causes of death for both children and adults in developed countries. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that affects infants and young children. Neuroblastoma tumors are the most common solid extracranial tumors in children and are also the most deadly. READ MORE

  5. 25. Talking to the Brain at the Blood-Brain Barrier through Inflammation-Induced Prostaglandin E2

    Author : Ana Maria Vasilache; Camilla Nilsberth; Sivert Lindström; Fredrik Elinder; Ted Ebendal; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The immune-to-brain signaling is a critical survival factor when the body is confronted by pathogens, and in particular by microorganisms. During infections, the ability of the immune system to engage the central nervous system (CNS) in the management of the inflammatory response is just as important as its ability to mount a specific immune response against the pathogen, since the CNS can provide a systemic negative feed-back to the immune activation by release of stress hormones and also can prioritize the usage of the energy resources by the vital organs.
