  1. 1. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University

    Author : Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Stockholms universitet.; [2010]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 2. 2. Macroalgae in the Baltic Sea responses to low salinity and nutrient enrichment in Ceramium and Fucus

    University dissertation from Umeå : Ekologi och geovetenskap

    Author : Lena Bergström; Umeå universitet.; [2005]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; adaptation; asexual reproduction; Baltic Sea; Gulf of Bothnia; salinity; macroalgae; nutrients; sexual reproduction; stress; Ekologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The brackish Baltic Sea is a marginal environment for both marine and freshwater species. The rate of ecological differentiation is presumably high due to strong selection pressure from a gradient of decreasing salinity that has been present in its current state for only about 3 000 years. 4. 4. Human Abuses of Coral Reefs- Adaptive Responses and Regime Transitions

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Institutionen för systemekologi

    Author : Ingrid Nordemar; Stockholms universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Coral Reefs; Disturbance; Stress; Adaptive responses; Macroalgae; Ecosystem regimes; Resilience; Competition; Traits; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : During the last few decades, coral reefs have become a disappearing feature of tropical marine environments, and those reefs that do remain are severely threatened. It is understood that humans have greately altered the environment under which these ecosystems previously have thrived and evoloved. READ MORE

  5. 5. Macroalgal community dynamics on coral reefs Implications for management

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Systems Ecology, Stockholm University

    Author : Erik Mörk; Stockholms universitet.; [2011]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral Reefs; Herbivory; Nutrients; Ecosystem change; Fish; Sea Urchins; East Africa; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Although rather inconspicuous on healthy coral reefs, macroalgae form the basis of coral food webs. Today, macroalgae are generally increasing and many reefs undergo transitions from coral to macroalgal dominance resulting from e.g. enhanced nutrient loading or increased fishing. READ MORE
