1. Macrocyclic polypeptides from plants
Abstract : The aim of this work was to explore the structural and functional diversity of polypeptides that are found in plants. Expanding knowledge of simililarities between plant use of these compound and animal use promises exceptional opportunities for finding, from plant research, new structures with biomedical and biotechnological potential. 2. Studies on Cytotoxic and Neutrophil Challenging Polypeptides and Cardiac Glycosides of Plant Origin
Abstract : This thesis examines the isolation and characterisation (biological and chemical) of polypeptides from plants. A fractionation protocol was developed and applied on 100 plant materials with the aim of isolating highly purified polypeptide fractions from small amounts of plant materials. READ MORE

3. Macrocyclic Carbohydrate/Amino Acid Hybrid Molecules - Synthesis and Evaluation as Artificial Receptors
Abstract : Methods were developed for the synthesis of three different types of macrocyclic carbohydrate/amino acid hybrid molecules. In the synthesis of the first type of macrocycles, a glucosamine derivative was oxidized at C6 and the obtained sugar amino acid was coupled to tripeptides. READ MORE

4. The solution conformations of macrocycles. Applications in the exploration of weak interactions and in drug development
Abstract : Understanding the solution conformation and dynamics of molecules with biological relevance, as well as the impact of their conformation stabilizing weak interactions, is for example important for drug design. Macrocycles have attractive pharmaceutical properties, and are of special interest as drug leads for targets with large, flat and featureless binding sites like protein-protein interfaces. READ MORE

5. Metallocene based peptidomimetics and chiral catalysts
Abstract : Several optically active organometallic Phe-AAn-Phe peptidomimetics and macrocyclic Phe-(Phe)n peptides have been synthesized by either intra- or intermolecular peptide bond formation of the corresponding bis(amino acid) derivatives. The key bis(amino acid) derivatives were available from an improved multi-step synthetic route, utilising Horner-Wadswort-Emmons olefination of organometallic aldehydes with phosphonylglycine reagents, enantioselective hydrogenation of didehydro amino acids and classical solution and/or solid phase peptide synthesis methodology.
