  1. 1. Palaeoenvironment in North-Western Romania during the last 15 000 years

    Author : Angelica Feurdean; Barbara Wohlfarth; Ann-Marie Robertsson; Leif Björkman; Iustinian Petrescu; Katherine J Willis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Northwest Romania; Gutaiului Mountains; pollenstratigraphy; macrofossil remains; Lateglacial; Holocene; tree refugia; tree dynamics; past climate; human influence;

    Abstract : The objectives of this thesis are to establish a chronological framework for environmental changes during the last 15,000 years in northwest Romania, to reconstruct the vegetation development, and to evaluate the underlying processes for forest dynamics. Furthermore, an overview of earlier and ongoing pollenstratigraphic work in Romania is provided. READ MORE

  2. 2. Urbanised Nature in the Past : Site formation and Environmental Developement in Two Swedish Towns, AD 1200-1800

    Author : Jens Heimdahl; Ann-Marie Robertsson; Jane Sidell; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Urban stratigraphy; environmental reconstruction; site formation; geoarchaeology; dark earth; macrofossil analysis; Quaternary geology; Kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : In order to explore site formations and reconstruct environmental development in Medieval and Post-Medieval towns, urban occupational strata in Norrköping and Karlstad were studied according to biostratigraphy, sedimentology and pedology. New field procedures including continuous pilot sampling, parallel archaeological and geological stratigraphic interpretation, and on-site analysis of plant macrofossils were developed and applied at archaeological excavations in both towns. 3. 3. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit. 4. 4. Holocene climate and environmental change in high latitudes as recorded by stable isotopes in peat deposits

    Author : Päivi Kaislahti Tillman; Steffen Holzkämper; Stefan Wastegård; Peter Kuhry; Thomas W. D. Edwards; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stable isotopes; Holocene; subarctic; climate; Sphagnum fuscum; kvartärgeologi; Quarternary Geology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in α-cellulose isolated from Sphagnum fuscum moss remains were used as climate proxies. The main focus was to implement the methods in records from high latitude peatlands in the Northern Hemisphere (west-central Canada and north-eastern European Russia), reconstruct palaeoclimate of the studied regions during the Holocene, and evaluate the compatibility of results with other proxy records, especially tree-ring isotope time-series.
