  1. 1. Porous polymeric materials for chromatography : Synthesis, functionalization and characterization

    Author : Emil Byström; Knut Irgum; Camilla Viklund; Solomon Tesfalidet; Klaus K Unger; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; porous polymer monolith; pore size distribution; nitrogen sorptiometry; mercury intrusion porosimetry; scanning and transmission electron microscopy; plasma functionalization; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Separation methods; Separationsmetoder; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Background: Separation science is heavily reliant on materials to fulfill ever more complicated demands raised by other areas of science, notably the rapidly expanding molecular biosciences and environmental monitoring. The key to successful separations lies in a combination of physical properties and surface chemistry of stationary phases used in liquid chromatographic separation, and this thesis address both aspects of novel separation materials. Abstract : The completion of sequencing of human and other mammalian genomes opens a new era for drug development. New approaches have been proposed for tackling diseases such as development of small molecule therapies based on understanding of human genome and proteome, new proteinous based therapies, where the therapeutic protein can inhibit or modify a certain metabolic pathway or DNA-based therapies delivering a gene into the cell (e. Abstract : The transition to bioeconomy will reduce our dependency on fossil fuels as well as contribute to a more sustainable society. Within this framework, exploitation and development of renewable substitutes to petroleum-based products provides feasible roadmap for the material design. READ MORE

  4. 4. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds

    Author : Daniel Guzmán; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Halomonas species; poly 3-hydroxybutyrate ; genome sequence; Fed-batch cultivation; macroporous scaffolds;

    Abstract : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics. 5. 5. Preparation and Characterization of Macroporous Cryostructured Materials

    Author : Harald Kirsebom; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Macroporous hydrogels are regarded as interesting materials both within biotechnology and biomedicine due to their properties. These materials can be prepared from a wide range of synthetic or naturally occurring compounds using a number of different techniques for their production. READ MORE
