  1. 11. Building crystals out of crystals : Synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles and self-assembled mesocrystals

    Author : Erik Wetterskog; Lennart Bergström; Markus Niederberger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron oxide; nanoparticle; synthesis; self-assembly; characterization; electron microscopy; scattering; magnetic properties; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the fabrication and characterization of self-assembled arrays of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3 and Fe1-xO) nanoparticles. The synthesis of spherical and cubic iron oxide nanocrystals, with sizes between 5 and 30 nm and narrow size distributions, is demonstrated, along with a rigorous morphological characterization of the cubic nanoparticles. 2. 12. Kinetic Energy Storage and Magnetic Bearings : for Vehicular Applications

    Author : Johan Abrahamsson; Hans Bernhoff; Urban Lundin; Richard Magdalena Stephan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; flywheel; magnetic bearing; energy storage; electric vehicle; Engineering Science with specialization in Science of Electricity; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot elektricitetslära;

    Abstract : One of the main challenges in order to make electric cars competitive with gas-powered cars is in the improvement of the electric power system. Although many of the energy sources currently used in electric vehicles have sufficientlyhigh specific energy, their applicability is limited due to low specific power. READ MORE

  3. 13. Nanocellulose: Energy Applications and Self-Assembly

    Author : Valentina Guccini; German Salazar-Alvarez; Olli Ikkala; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanocellulose; self-assembly; fuel cell; lithium ion battery; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Technologies based on renewable materials are required to decrease the environmental cost and promote the development of a sustainable society. In this regard, nanocellulose extracted from wood finds many applications thanks to its intrinsic mechanical and chemical properties as well as the versatility in its manufacturing processes. 4. 14. Following nanoparticle self-assembly in real-time : Small-angle X-ray scattering and quartz crystal microbalance study of self-assembling iron oxide nanocubes

    Author : Martin Kapuscinski; Lennart Bergström; Niklas Hedin; Andrei Petukhov; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; self-assembly; mesocrystal; time-resolved; small-angle X-ray scattering; iron oxide nanocubes; QCM-D; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : Self-assembly of nanoparticles is a widely used technique to produce nanostructured materials with crystallographic coherence on the atomic scale, i.e. mesocrystals, which can display useful collective properties. This thesis focusses on the underlying mechanism and dynamics of mesocrystal formation by using real-time techniques. READ MORE

  5. 15. Assembly of the Caledonian Orogenic Wedge, Jämtland, Sweden

    Author : Hagen Bender; Uwe Ring; Bjarne SG Almqvist; Rob Strachan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; collisional orogeny; Scandinavian Caledonides; Seve Nappe Complex; Köli Nappe Complex; in-sequence thrusting; out-of-sequence thrusting; imbrication; nappe stacking; orogenic wedge assembly; Rb–Sr geochronology; rock magnetism; anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility; Geology; geologi;

    Abstract : Collisional orogeny creates the largest mountain belts on Earth. The Caledonides of Scandinavia are a deeply eroded, ancient mountain belt, which today exposes a deep section through the former orogenic interior. READ MORE
