6. Materials for Magnetic Recording Applications
Abstract : In the first part of this work, the influence of hydrogen on the structural and magnetic properties of Fe/V(001) superlattices was studied. The local structure of the vanadium-hydride layers was determined by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. READ MORE

7. Sustainable porous organic materials : Synthesis, sorption properties and characterization
Abstract : The resources available to us humans, including metals, minerals, biomass, air, water, and anything else on the planet, are being used at an increasing rate. This anthropogenic use of resources both depletes the resources and has negative impacts on other resources, e.g. the biosphere. READ MORE

8. Studies of magnetic multi-core nanoparticles for biomedical applications
Abstract : In recent years, there has been growing interest in using magnetic multi-core nanoparticles in biomedical applications, and particularly in bioseparation and biosensing. In this thesis, two computer simulation techniques have been implemented to study the magnetic response of these particles, and a microfluidic platform has been fabricated to manipulate bio-functionalized magnetic particles in suspension for immunoassays. 9. 3D Magnetic Photonic Crystals : Synthesis and Characterization
Abstract : This thesis presents the synthesis methods and the characterizations of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, silica spheres with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded, and three dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) prepared from the spheres. The structure, material composition, magnetic and optical properties, photonic band gaps (PBGs), as well as how these properties depend on the concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles, are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Faraday rotation (FR) and optical spectrophotometers. 10. Magnetism of Semiconductors and Metallic Multilayers
Abstract : Magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors and magnetic metallic multilayers are investigated by SQUID magnetometry. By doping GaAs with magnetic Mn2+ ions under well defined growth conditions, one obtains a diluted magnetic semiconductor, (Ga,Mn)As, in which the randomly-distributed magnetic ions act as acceptor centers.
