  1. 1. Bright Needles in a Haystack : A Search for Magnetic Monopoles Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

    Author : Alexander Burgman; Carlos Pérez de los Heros; Olga Botner; Allan Hallgren; David Milstead; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnetic monopole; IceCube; astroparticle physics; neutrino telescope; Fysik med inriktning mot elementarpartikelfysik; Physics with specialization in Elementary Particle Physics;

    Abstract : The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole is designed to detect the light produced by the daughter-particles of in-ice neutrino-nucleon interactions, using one cubic kilometer of ice instrumented with more than 5000 optical sensors.Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical particles with non-zero magnetic charge, predicted to exist in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. 3. 3. Static and dynamic properties of uniform- and vortex-states in synthetic nanomagnets

    Author : Björn Koop; Vladislav Professor; Joo-Von Kim; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Synthetic antiferromagnets (SAFs) consist of two thin ferromagnetic particles separated by a thin nonmagnetic spacer. The magnetic moments of the two particles couple antiparallel via dipolar interactions, with the interlayer exchange interaction suppressed by a suitable choice of the spacer material. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spin ice and demagnetising theory

    Author : Mikael Twengström; Patrik Henelius; Peter Holdsworth; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geometrical frustration; spin ice; Monte Carlo simulations; demagnetising theory; special temperatures; Ewald summation; neutron scattering; structure factors; loop algorithms; parallel tempering; frustrated ferromagnets; equilibration issues; long-range interactions; exchange interactions.; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Frustration, or the inability to simultaneously minimise all local interactions is, a phenomenon occurring in a broad number of physical systems. We will in this thesis focus on a class of frustrated ferromagnetic materials called spin ices and how both numerical and experimental techniques can be used to understand their properties. 5. 5. Searches for Massive Highly Ionising Particles at the ATLAS Experiment and in Polar Volcanic Rocks, and Performance Studies of the First Level ATLAS Trigger System

    Author : Katarina Bendtz; David Milstead; Kenneth Österberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetiska monopoler; Trigger; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics describes the elementary particles and their interactions. Despite passing a number of high precision falsification tests, it is argued that the SM suffers from a number of shortcomings. Many Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) theories have therefore been postulated. READ MORE
