1. Manipulation of Light with Transformation Optics
Abstract : Transformation optics, a recently booming area, provides people a new approach to design optical devices for manipulating light. With transformation optics, a lot of novel optical devices are proposed, such as invisibility cloaks, optical wormholes, optical black holes, illusion devices. READ MORE

2. Designer magnetoplasmonics for adaptive nano-optics
Abstract : Materials that provide real-time control of the fundamental properties of light at visible and near-infrared frequencies enable the essential components for future optical devices. Metal nanostructures that couple electromagnetic (EM) radiation on a sub-wavelength length scale to free electrons, forming propagating or localized surface plasmons, provide many exciting functionalities due to their ability to manipulate light via the local EM field shaping and enhancement. 3. Quantum optics in constrained geometries
Abstract : When light exhibits particle properties, and when matter exhibits wave properties quantum mechanics is needed to describe physical phenomena. A two-photon source produces nonmaximally entangled photon pairs when the source is small enough to diffract light. It is shown that diffraction degrades the entanglement. READ MORE

4. Quantum Optics and Quantum Information Processing in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Crystals
Abstract : In this thesis, aspects of the use of cryogenically cooled rare-earth-ion-doped crystals in the fields of quantum optics and quantum information processing are addressed. The experiments and theoretical considerations referred to in this thesis are based on the coherent transient interaction between light and the ions in the crystals. READ MORE

5. 3D Magnetic Photonic Crystals : Synthesis and Characterization
Abstract : This thesis presents the synthesis methods and the characterizations of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, silica spheres with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded, and three dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) prepared from the spheres. The structure, material composition, magnetic and optical properties, photonic band gaps (PBGs), as well as how these properties depend on the concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles, are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Faraday rotation (FR) and optical spectrophotometers.
