6. Materials for Magnetic Recording Applications
Abstract : In the first part of this work, the influence of hydrogen on the structural and magnetic properties of Fe/V(001) superlattices was studied. The local structure of the vanadium-hydride layers was determined by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. READ MORE

7. Density functional calculations of optical spectra and narrow band systems
Abstract : A calculational method, based on density functionaltheory, has been used to calculate optica spectra for a wide range of systems,as well as ground-state properties of some narrow-band systems. A systematic study of the trends in the optical properties of the 4Brefractory metal compounds has been performed. READ MORE

8. Enhanced Polarizing Neutron Optics with 11B4C Incorporation : SLD Tunability, Interface Refinement, and Elimination of Magnetic Coercivity
Abstract : This thesis explores novel strategies for improving Fe-based polarizing neutron optics, a critical part for improving neutron scattering methods to study materials science, physics, biology, medicine, chemistry and cultural heritage. Polarization analysis is important in uncovering data on magnetic domains, protein structures, molecular composition and orientation in biological systems, and ion-diffusion mechanisms that would otherwise be inaccessible. 9. Spin dynamics in the terahertz regime
Abstract : It is known that the use of conventional optical lasers for the study of ultrafast magnetization dynamics imparts heat to the materials under study, which creates a highly non equilibrium state and masks the fundamental coupling processes leading to ultrafast demagnetization. In order to understand, control and manipulate the dynamics of spins in magnetic systems a new kind of radiation called terahertz (THz) is starting to be used in recent years. READ MORE

10. Magnetic Thin Films with Graded and Tilted Anisotropy for Spintronic Devices
Abstract : In this thesis magnetic thin films with graded or tilted anisotropy are intensively studied for potential applications in spintronic devices. A continuum of stable remanent resistance states is realized in Co/Pd multilayers based on a perpendicularly magnetized pseudo spin valve (PSV). READ MORE
