  1. 21. Energy Transfer and Conversion in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere System

    Author : Lisa Rosenqvist; Stephan Buchert; Andris Vaivads; Mike Lockwood; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Space and plasma physics; solar system; space physics; magnetospheric physics; plasma physics; magnetic storms; substorms; boundary layers; magnetic reconnection; energy conversion; space weather; Rymd- och plasmafysik;

    Abstract : Magnetized planets, such as Earth, are strongly influenced by the solar wind. The Sun is very dynamic, releasing varying amounts of energy, resulting in a fluctuating energy and momentum exchange between the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres. READ MORE

  2. 22. Solar wind ions inside the induced magnetosphere of Mars

    Author : Catherine Dieval; Christian Mazelle; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Abstract : The subject of the thesis is analysis and modeling of the entry, transport, and atmospheric precipitation of solar wind ions, H+ and He2+, into the induced magnetosphere of Mars. The solar wind is a flow of charged particles emitted by the Sun. The solar wind carries with it a magnetic field, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). READ MORE

  3. 23. Plasma and dust interaction in the magnetosphere of Saturn

    Author : Jonas Olson; Svetlana Ratynskaia; Carmine Castaldo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; saturn; dusty plasma;

    Abstract : The Cassini spacecraft orbits Saturn since 2004, carrying a multitude of instruments for studies of the plasma environment around the planet as well as the constituents of the ring system. Of particular interest to the present thesis is the large E ring, which consists mainly of water ice grains, smaller than a few micrometres, referred to as dust. READ MORE

  4. 24. The solar wind protons inside the induced magnetosphere of Mars

    Author : Catherine Dieval; Maria Hamrin; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Abstract : Mars is an unmagnetized planet. Mars has no intrinsic magnetic field but has local magnetic anomalies in the crust. The solar wind, which is the plasma flowing from the Sun at supersonic speed, interacts with the magnetic fields of the currents induced in the conductive Martian ionosphere, deviates and slows down to subsonic speeds. 5. 25. The induced magnetospheres and magnetotails of Mars and Venus

    Author : Aikaterini Stergiopoulou; David Andrews; Niklas Edberg; Lasse Clausen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Mars; Venus; Ionosphere; Induced Magnetosphere; Induced Magnetotail;

    Abstract : In this work we focus on several aspects of the ionospheres, induced magnetospheres, and magnetotails of the unmagnetized planets Mars and Venus. The solar wind interaction with unmagnetized planets differs from the magnetized planets: they are more directly exposed to the solar wind, and consequently can respond faster and more dynamically to solar wind variations, necessitating careful analysis of the driving conditions upstream simultaneously with plasma measurements in the system.
