  1. 6. VLF and ULF Waves Associated with Magnetospheric Substorms

    Author : Andrew Collier; Lars Blomberg; James McKenzie; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space physics; Subtorms; Magnetosphere; VLF waves; ULF waves; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : A magnetospheric substorm is manifested in a variety of phenomena observed both in space and on the ground. Two electromagnetic signatures are the Substorm Chorus Event (SCE) and Pi2 pulsations. The SCE is a Very Low Frequency (VLF) radio phenomenon observed on the ground after the onset of the substorm expansion phase. READ MORE

  2. 7. Space Plasma Dynamics : Instabilities, Coherent Vortices and Covariant Parametrization

    Author : David Sundkvist; Jan-Erik Wahlund; Andris Vaivads; Stuart Bale; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma; instabilities; turbulence; coherent structures; vortex; self-organization; magnetosphere; waves; electromagnetism; covariant; space instrumentation; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : The magnetospheric cusps are two funnel-like regions of Earth's magnetosphere where solar wind plasma can have direct access to the ionosphere. The cusps are very dynamic regions where wave-particle interactions continuously take place and redistribute energy among different particle populations. READ MORE

  3. 8. Electrostatic plasma waves associated with collisionless magnetic reconnection : Spacecraft observations

    Author : Konrad Steinvall; Yuri Khotyaintsev; Daniel Graham; Andris Vaivads; Jonathan Rae; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic reconnection; Plasma waves; Electron holes; Solar wind; Magnetosphere; Magnetospheric Multiscale; Solar Orbiter; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process where changes in magnetic field topology result in explosive energy conversion, plasma mixing, heating, and energization. In geospace, magnetic reconnection couples the Earth’s magnetosphere to the solar wind plasma, enabling plasma transport across the magnetopause. READ MORE

  4. 9. Auroral Electric Fields From Satellite Observations and Numerical Modelling

    Author : Tomas Karlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Satellite measurements; electric fields; ionosphere; magnetosphere; diverging electric fields; downward current region; black aurora; westward travelling surge; auroral bulge; subauroral ion drifts SAID ; subauroral electric fields SAEF ; mid-latit; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis is about electrodynamics of thehigh-latitude/auroral region of near-Earth space. The work ismainly based on electric field measurements made by the doubleprobe instrument on the Freja satellite at altitudes ofapproximately 800-1700 km, together with measurements fromother instruments on the same satellite, and ground-basedinstrumentation. 5. 10. Energy Conversion and Particle Acceleration at Turbulent Plasma Jet Fronts

    Author : Louis Richard; Yuri V. Khotyaintsev; Daniel B. Graham; Andris Vaivads; Emiliya Yordanova; Vassilis Angelopoulos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma jets; Magnetic reconnection; Particle acceleration; Magnetosphere; Magnetospheric Multiscale; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Abstract : High-speed plasma flows (jets) are ubiquitous phenomena in the visible Universe. When the fast plasma flow encounters the ambient plasma at rest, it forms a front where its kinetic energy is dissipated. At the jet front, charged particles gain energy from the electromagnetic fields through heating and acceleration. READ MORE
