  1. 1. New strategies and tools for Plasmodium falciparum case management and surveillance in the era of imminent resistance to artemisinin-based combination therapy in Tanzania

    Author : Lwidiko E Mhamilawa; Andreas Mårtensson; Billy Ngasala; Ulrika Morris; Ib Christian Bygbjerg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; artemether-lumefantrine; drug resistance; Tanzania; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Artemether-lumefantrine has been an efficacious first line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Tanzania since its introduction in 2006. Interest has developed in understanding the observation of high residual PCR determined positivity rates on day 3 after supervised artemether-lumefantrine treatment in the magnitude of almost 30% in previous assessments from 2015 in Bagamoyo district, Tanzania. 2. 2. Acute febrile illness in preschool children in Zanzibar - Infectious aetiologies, diagnosis and treatment

    Author : Kristina Elfving; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Children; Infections; Low-income country; Tanzania; malaria; pneumonia; antibiotics; fever; diagnosis; polymerase chain reaction; preschool; influenza virus; Respiratory syncytial virus; diarrhoea; norovirus; dengue virus;

    Abstract : Background: A majority of the three million children in Africa that do not survive their fifth birthday die from infections that often start as a seemingly uncomplicated febrile illness. Primary health care workers frequently encounter febrile children with a negative malaria rapid diagnostic test (mRDT), in particular in places like Zanzibar with a considerable decline in malaria prevalence. 3. 3. Aiming at malaria elimination in Zanzibar

    Author : Delér Shakely; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Following the increase of the international funding for implementation of the combined malaria control strategies in the past decade, a significant reduction of malaria attributed morbidity and mortality has been achieved. Yet, malaria is still a severe threat to global health. READ MORE

  4. 4. Evaluating and optimizing surveillance and response strategies for malaria elimination in the Asia Pacific region

    Author : Chris Cotter; Andreas Mårtensson; Arantxa Roca-Feltrer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; malaria elimination; surveillance and response; reactive case detection; sociobehavorial; reactive drug administration; molecular diagnostics; microsatellite genotyping; Plasmodium vivax; low transmission;

    Abstract : Malaria case investigation and reactive case detection (RACD) activities are widely implemented in low transmission settings to identify additional malaria infections and gather surveillance information, but with varying degrees of success. Challenges in conducting RACD include poor diagnostic sensitivity (particularly for low density and asymptomatic infections), knowledge gaps among those conducting RACD, financial and resource constraints, and operational and logistical difficulties. 5. 5. Malaria control measures : impact on malaria and anaemia in holoendemic area of rural coastal Tanzania

    Author : Zul Premji; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Malaria is a major public health problem in tropical Africa. It is particularly the main killer disease in children below five years and its health impact is most severe in the rural areas. Malarial anaemia is believed to be the main complication in high endemic areas. READ MORE
