1. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods
Abstract : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death. 2. Exhaled markers of oxidative stress in the airways
Abstract : Breath contains a number of different molecules, some of which may have potential use as markers for oxidative stress in the airways during chronic airway inflammation. The major objectives were to develop and validate methods for quantifying five potential exhaled markers of oxidative stress: malondialdehyde (MDA) and free 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and ethane, pentane and isoprene in exhaled air, and to test the applicability of the methods. 3. Nitrates and Left Ventricular Dysfunction
Abstract : Use of beta-blockers and inhibitors of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) is established practice in the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). Clinical studies also suggest beneficial long-term effects of nitrates in CHF. READ MORE

4. Cellular immunity and inflammation in atherosclerosis
Abstract : Atherosclerosis, the major cause of death and disability in western countries, is nowadays recognized as an inflammatory disease. Low density lipoprotein (LDL), the major carrier of cholesterol in plasma, is trapped in the subendothelial space, where compounds inside of LDL are chemically modified through lipid peroxidation. 5. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography with laser-induced fluorescence detection applied to the analysis of biological samples
Abstract : The research presented in this thesis is focused on the potential for using the combination of micellar electrokinetic chromatography with laser-induced fluorescence detection for the determination of compounds in biological samples. The topics that have been addressed are the development of separation electrolytes, the need for sample preparation procedures, the derivatization of the compounds of interest and the detection of these by laser-induced fluorescence.
