  1. 1. From waste problem to renewable energy resource : exploring horse manure as feedstock for anaerobic digestion

    Author : Åsa Hadin; Ola Norrman Eriksson; Karl Hillman; Nils Ryrholm; Jaana Sorvari; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; horse manure; environmental systems analysis; energy systems; renewable energy; environmental impact; anaerobic digestion; biogas; biofertilizer; systems perspective; bedding; incineration; composting; horse manure utilization;

    Abstract : A sustainable energy system requires, according to energy policies, reduced emissions of greenhouse gases, increased ratio of renewable sources of energy and more efficient use of energy. Horse manure could be regarded as waste, but also as a resource for renewable energy and plant nutrients. READ MORE

  2. 2. Environmental Systems Analysis of Wastewater Management

    Author : Erik Kärrman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The history of wastewater management tells us that efforts have been made at solving only one problem at the time; sanitation during the first half of the 20th Century followed by eutrophication of lakes and sea and, for the past ten years, recycling of nutrients. After the "Brundtland Report", 1987, a reversal of the debate occurred where water management was discussed in a more holistic manner than before. READ MORE

  3. 3. Simulation of Phosphorus, Zinc and Cadmium Mass Flow in Dairy Farming Systems

    Author : Anna-Karin Modin Edman; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; Miljöstudier; Environmental studies; management; Cd; Zn; P; mass balance; system analysis; simulation;

    Abstract : A simulation model, FARMFLOW, was developed for the calculation of phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) stocks, flows and balances in different parts of a dairy farming system. The simulated continuous change in element stocks within the farming system enables evaluation of the long-term effects of management practices. READ MORE

  4. 4. Nitrogen land-sea fluxes in the Baltic Sea catchment : Empirical relationships and budgets

    Author : Hanna Eriksson Hägg; Christoph Humborg; Carl-Magnus Mörth; Hans Borg; Sybil Seitzinger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen fluxes; Baltic Sea; primary emissions; riverine export; Scenario analysis; climate change; animal protein consumption; fertilizer use; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : In this thesis empirical relationships and modeling tools are used to describe the relationship between human activities and meso- and large scale riverine N fluxes from land to sea. On a large scale Paper I showed that by only having knowledge about human population size and runoff one can estimate the riverine export of DIN (r2= 0.76). READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental studies of ash transformation processes in thermochemical conversion of P-rich biomass and sludge

    Author : Gustav Häggström; Marcus Öhman; Rainer Backman; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ash transformation; phosphorus recovery; sewage sludge; chicken manure; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : The efficient use of resources and sustainable recovery of various materials are important to minimize the anthropogenic impact on the climate and environment. One such resource is the phosphorus present in manure and sewage sludge. READ MORE
