  1. 6. A Deep Dive into Sediments : Exploring approaches to assess environmental risks and achieving environmental goals in management of contaminated sediments in Sweden

    Author : Peter Bruce; Clare Bradshaw; Yvonne Ohlsson; Anna Sobek; Sabine Apitz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sediment; risk assessment; risk evaluation; risk management; contaminants; regulations; weight of evidence; line of evidence; environmental goals; environmental management; guidelines; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Contaminated sediments are common, especially near urban and industrialized areas, and they can have negative ecological effects. In three studies, I explore the challenges for environmental management of contaminated sediments, focusing on environmental risk assessment (ERA) in Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 7. Pesticide impact of intensive banana production on aquatic ecosystems in Costa Rica

    Author : Luisa Eugenia Castillo; Donald J Baird; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : A combination of chemical and biological studies demonstrated extensive surface water contamination, the occurrence of pesticides in sediments, especially near the banana plantation areas, and biological impacts. Pesticides were even found in the downstream waters of the Tortuguero conservation area, a highly diverse wetland that protects several endangered species. READ MORE

  3. 8. Effects of community- and government-managed marine protected areas on tropical seagrass and coral communities

    Author : Angelica Chirico; Johan Eklöf; Nils Kautsky; Even Moland; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal ecosystems; conservation; marine spatial planning; locally managed; fisheries closure; benthic communities; fish; foundation species; macroalgae; secondary succession; life-history; trait variability; plasticity; tourism; human disturbance; fishing; experimental research; Western Indian Ocean; causal modelling; structural equation model; permanova; multivariate data; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Tropical seagrass beds and coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide ecosystem services, such as fish production and coastal protection, and support livelihoods of millions of people. At the same time, these ecosystems are threatened globally by anthropogenic disturbances, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming. READ MORE

  4. 9. Effects of contrasting types of marine protected areas on seagrass- and coral communities : are community-based reserves an important complement to government-managed protected areas?

    Author : Angelica Chirico; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Coastal ecosystems, including seagrass beds and coral reefs, are among the most ecological and economical important ecosystems on Earth. At the same time as these ecosystems support livelihoods of coastal communities they are being highly degraded worldwide. READ MORE

  5. 10. Anthropogenic Disturbances and Shifts in Tropical Seagrass Ecosystems

    Author : Johan S. Eklöf; Nils Kautsky; Patrik Rönnbäck; Teresa Alcoverro; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Aquaculture; feedback mechanisms; Kenya; management; overgrazing; regime shift; resilience; seagrass; seaweed farming; sea urchins; Tanzania; trophic cascades; Zanzibar; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Marine Ecotoxicology; marin ekotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Seagrasses constitute the basis for diverse and productive ecosystems worldwide. In East Africa, they provide important ecosystem services (e.g. fisheries) but are potentially threatened by increasing resource use and lack of enforced management regulations. READ MORE
