  2. 2. Marine Seaweed Invasions the Ecology of Introduced Fucus evanescens

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Botaniska institutionen

    Author : Sofia A. Wikström; Lena Kautsky; Ove Eriksson; Paul Lavery; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological invasions; marine; seaweed; algae; herbivory; enemy release hypothesis; phlorotannins; anti-fouling; Fucus evanescens; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Biological invasions are an important issue of global change and an increased understanding of invasion processes is of crucial importance for both conservation managers and international trade. In this thesis, I have studied the invasion of the brown seaweed Fucus evanescens, to investigate the fate and effect of a perennial, habitat-forming seaweed introduced to a coastal ecosystem. 3. 3. Genomic and morphological diversity of marine planktonic diatom-diazotroph associations a continuum of integration and diversification through geological time

    University dissertation from Stockholm : Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences, Stockholm University

    Abstract : Symbioses between eukaryotes and nitrogen (N2)-fixing cyanobacteria (or diazotrophs) are quite common in the plankton community. A few genera of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) such as Rhizosolenia, Hemiaulus and Chaetoceros are well known to form symbioses with the heterocystous diazotrophic cyanobacteria Richelia intracellularis and Calothrix rhizosoleniae. 4. 4. Pigment and Thiamine Dynamics in Marine Phytoplankton and Copepods

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Ingrid Wänstrand; Pauli Snoeijs; Marianne Pedersén; Helmut Hillebrandt; [2004]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; phytoplankton composition; pigments; chemotaxonomy; inorganic nutrients; pelagic copepods; grazing; astaxanthin; thiamine; mesocosm experiments; marine food webs; eutrophication; Baltic Sea; Biologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi;

    Abstract : Based on a field study and several mesocosm experiments, I evaluated the use of pigments as chemotaxonomical biomarkers for phytoplankton community composition in the Baltic Sea and I examined effects of inorganic nutrients on the dynamics of carotenoids and thiamine (vitamin B1) at the phytoplankton–copepod level in marine pelagic food webs.My results show that HPLC pigment analysis combined with CHEMTAX data processing was an accurate alternative to microscopic analysis of Baltic Sea phytoplankton.
