1. Spatiotemporal streamflow variability in a boreal landscape : Importance of landscape composition for catchment hydrological functioning
Abstract : The understanding of how different parts of a landscape contribute to streamflow by storing and releasing water has long been a central issue in hydrology. Knowledge about what controls streamflow dynamics across landscapes can further our understanding of how catchments store and release water, facilitate predictions for ungauged catchments, and improve the management of water quality and resources. 2. Earth Observation based Monitoring of Urbanizationand Environmental Impact in Kigali, Rwanda
Abstract : Urbanization is one of the great challenges in the 21st century. Despite being an engine for the global economy, urban areas consume 78% of World's energy and emit more than 60% of greenhouse gas emission. Sub-SaharanAfrican cities, e.g. READ MORE

3. A palaeolimnological study of the anthropogenic impact on dissolved organic carbon in South Swedish lakes
Abstract : During the past three decades, increases have been observed in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and colour in the surface waters of lakes and rivers in parts of Europe and North America, raising concern about the effects on the quality of aquatic environments with consequences for biodiversity, resource availability and recreational use. Various hypotheses have been put forward to explain the recent increases in DOC concentration and numerous studies have been published linking them to declining anthropogenic atmospherically deposited sulphur. 4. Greening Earth? : Science, Politics and Land Use in the Kyoto Negotiations
Abstract : Can a deliberate enhancement of the natural uptake of atmospheric carbon dioxide in forests and agricultural lands contribute to global efforts to mitigate anthropogenic climate change? This is a question that has generated a great deal of debate and controversy since the inception of the multilateral climate negotiations in the early 1990s. This thesis offers an analysis of how this debate has played out in the negotiations on the land-use change and forestry activities in the Kyoto Protocol. READ MORE

5. Interactions between climate, natural disturbances, and regeneration in boreal and hemi-boreal forests
Abstract : Natural disturbance is an important driving force of community dynamics in many forest types around the globe. Understanding spatial and temporal properties of disturbance events in the present and in the past is important in formulating the nature conservation strategies as well as for the modeling of climate and human impacts on forest vegetation.
