  1. 1. Population viability analysis for plants : practical recommendations and applications

    Author : Satu Ramula; Kari Lehtilä; Patrik Dinnétz; Esa Ranta; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; demography; matrix population models; population viability analysis; population growth rate; stochastic models; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Population viability analysis (PVA) is commonly used in conservation biology to predict population viability in terms of population growth rate and risk of extinction. However, large data requirements limit the use of PVA for many rare and threatened species. READ MORE

  2. 2. Response Matrix Reloaded : for Monte Carlo Simulations in Reactor Physics

    Author : Mickus Ignas; Jan Dufek; Jaakko Leppänen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kärnenergiteknik; Nuclear Engineering;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates Monte Carlo methods applied to criticality and time-dependent problems in reactor physics. Due to their accuracy and flexibility, Monte Carlo methods are considered as a “gold standard” in reactor physics calculations. However, the benefits come at a significant computing cost. READ MORE

  3. 3. Population differentiation in Lythrum salicaria along a latitudinal gradient

    Author : Katarina Olsson; Jon Ågren; Susan Kalisz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; additive genetic variance; clinal variation; evolutionary constraints; G matrix; genetic correlation; natural selection; pollen limitation; population differentiation; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In this thesis, quantitative genetic approaches, common-garden experiments, and field studies were combined to examine patterns of population differentiation and the genetic architecture of characters of putative adaptive significance in the widely distributed perennial herb Lythrum salicaria. In this work, I (1) documented patterns of population differentiation in phenology, life-history, and morphology along latitudinal gradients at different geographical scales, (2) investigated the genetic architecture of phenology, flower morphology, and inflorescence size, and (3) combined estimates of phenotypic selection in the field with information on the genetic variance-covariance matrix (G) to examine potential constraints to adaptive evolution. 4. 4. Population modeling using harpacticoid copepods : Bridging the gap between individual-level effects and protection goals of environmental risk assessment

    Author : Elin Lundström Belleza; Magnus Breitholtz; Annemette Palmqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Population modeling; Eco toxicity tests; Environmental risk assessment; Harpacticoid copepods; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : To protect the environment from contaminants, environmental risk assessment (ERA) evaluates the risk of adverse effects to populations, communities and ecosystems. Environmental management decisions rely on ERAs, which commonly are based on a few endpoints at the individual organism level. READ MORE

  5. 5. Population ecology and management of waders breeding on coastal meadows

    Author : Richard Ottvall; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; grazing management; population modelling; demography; genetic structure; population decline; Tringa totanus;

    Abstract : Many wader (Charadrii) populations are declining throughout in Europe, but the underlying causes are often poorly known and diverse. To fully grasp the reasons behind declines in vulnerable wader populations, it is crucial to understand the demography. READ MORE
