    Abstract : Reduced independent mobility of blind and low-vision individuals (BLVIs) cause considerable societal cost, burden on relatives, and reduced quality of life for the individuals, including increased anxiety, depression symptoms, need of assistance, risk of falls, and mortality. Despite the numerous electronic travel aids proposed since at least the 1940’s, along with ever-advancing technology, the mobility issues persist. READ MORE

  2. 2. Design and optimization of parallel haptic devices : Design methodology and experimental evaluation

    Author : Suleman Khan; Kjell Andersson; Jan Wikander; Ölvander Johan; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical simulation; 6-DOF haptic devices; design methodology.; SRA - ICT; SRA - Informations- och kommunikationsteknik;

    Abstract : The simulation of surgical procedures, in the case of hard tissues such as bone or teeth milling, using a haptic milling surgery simulator requires a haptic device which can provide high stiffness and transparency. To mimic a real milling process of hard tissue, such as for example creating a narrow channel or cavity, the simulator needs to provide force/torque feedback in 5–6 degrees of freedom (DOF). 3. 3. Managing Effects of Manufacturing Variation in Dental Medical Device Treatments - Increasing Geometrical Robustness

    Author : Timo Kero; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mass customization and dentistry.; medical devices; virtual verification; Robust design; variation simulation; tolerance analysis;

    Abstract : Today, there are many solutions for dental rehabilitation. A damaged tooth can be replaced with a dental crown, and a toothless patient can be rehabilitated with implants and a corresponding bridge set-up. Traditionally, a dental crown is manufactured by veneering porcelain to a metal surface that is obtained through the use of casting principles. READ MORE

  4. 4. Protein and Cell Interactions with Nanostructured Surfaces

    Author : Emma Westas; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bacteria; titanium dioxide; implant associated infections; metabolomics; cellular interactions; hydroxyapatite; immune complement activation; silica; nanoparticles; photocatalysis; protein adsorption; Nanostructured implants;

    Abstract : A great challenge of today’s implant development is to construct a surface that promotes tissue integration and avoids bacterial colonization. To avoid implant related infections, many argue that a surface promoting strong cell adhesion and tissue integration in favour for bacterial adhesion would solve the problem, the so-called race for the surface concept. 5. 5. Fluorescence Guided Resection of Brain Tumors : Evaluation of a Hand-held Spectroscopic Probe

    Author : Johan Richter; Karin Wårdell; Jan Hillman; Peter Siesjö; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Malignant gliomas grow infiltrative in the brain and can therefore not be completely removed by neurosurgical means. However, for an optimized oncological treatment it has proven useful to resect as much as possible of tumor. The identification of the tumor in the marginal zone is difficult but crucial. READ MORE
