  1. 1. Medical Device Innovation : The integrated processes of invention, diffusion and deployment

    Author : Kerstin Roback; Jan Persson; Stuart S. Blume; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Innovation; Medical technical products; Spread; Technique use; Technical development; Social change; Innovation; Medicintekniska produkter; Spridning; Teknikanvändning; Seknisk utveckling; Social förändring; Medical engineering; Medicinsk teknik;

    Abstract : An increased use of medical devices has been assumed to be a major cause of rising healthcare expenditures. Nations around the world are trying to keep costs down, but strong incentives still exist for the development and use of new devices. Innovation is, however, never exclusively good or bad and it is not easy to evaluate the net effect. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functions of PDGF-A and -C. Essential ligands for the PDGF alpha receptor

    Author : Hans Boström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; platelet-derived growth factor; PDGF-A; PDGF-C; PDGF alpha receptor; extracellular retention; gene targeting; mouse development; epithelial-mesenchymal interaction; lung; alveolar formation; spina bifida; gastrointestinal villus;

    Abstract : Altered protein kinase activity is a contributing factor in many diseases including most formsof human malignancies, and there is reason to believe that protein kinases will prove to be majordrug targets in the treatment of cancer. Protein kinases mediate most of the signal transduction ineukaryotic cells, regulating cellular events such as transcription, metabolism, proliferation,cytoskeletal rearrangement, migration, differentiation and apoptosis. 3. 3. Biomarkers of Inflammation and Intestinal Mucosa Pathology in Celiac Disease

    Author : Hanna Gustafsson Bragde; Jan Söderman; Ulf Jansson; Ewa Grodzinsky; Mats Fredrikson; Ross McManus; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic small intestinal immune-mediated enteropathy triggered by gluten. The only currently available treatment is complying with a lifelong gluten-free diet, which should not be commenced before a CD diagnosis has been established by diagnostic test results (including histopathologic assessment of small intestinal biopsies and CD-specific antibody levels). Abstract : Biological processes take place through interactions between macromolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins. It is, therefore, fundamental to understand the functions of proteins and how they form complexes in order to carry out their role. READ MORE

  5. 5. The transferrin polymorphism : population genetics and associations with reproductive hazards and disease

    Author : Carin Sikström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Human serum transferrin (TF) carries iron from the intestine, reticuloendothelial system and liver parenchymal cells to proliferating cells in the body. TF is highly polymorphic, and previous findings of associations between TF types and reproductive hazards in different species suggest that the TF polymorphism may be involved in natural selection and susceptibility to disease.
