  1. 6. Human leukocyte antigen in sickness and in health : Ankylosing spondylitis and HLA in Sweden

    Author : Jessika Nordin; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh; Jennifer Meadows; Matthew Webster; Alison Meynert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Disease genetics; Ankylosing spondylitis; HLA typing; Imputation; Inference; Sex-stratified; HLA-B*27 independent; Association tests; Functional validation; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) plays a major role in keeping us healthy, but some of the HLA alleles can contribute to disease susceptibility. One example is HLA-B*27, which confers increased susceptibility of ankylosing spondylitis and represents one of the strongest genetic associations found in any common human disease. READ MORE

  2. 7. Functional Role of Genetic Polymorphisms Associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Author : Sara E Löfgren; Ulf Gyllensten; Jan Hillert; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autoimmunity; systemic lupus erythematosus; genetic association; single nucleotide polymorphism; IRF5; CD226; miR-146a; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Genetics; Medicinsk genetik;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic and complex autoimmune disorder characterized by a failure in the mechanism of self-tolerance and production of autoantibodies, potentially affecting any organ in the body. The genetic factors behind the disease have been extensively studied in the past years and to date a list of more than 30 loci have been associated with SLE. READ MORE

  3. 8. Phylogeography and mitochondrial DNA diversity in arctic lemmings

    Author : Vadim B. Fedorov; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effects of Quaternary environmental fluctuations on the present patterns of mitochondrial DNA variation in the wood lemming, Myopus schisticolor, and the two genera of Arctic lemmings: collared lemmings, Dicrostonyx, and true lemmings, Lemmus.The phylogeographic pattern and the limited mtDNA diversity in the Scandinavian populations of the wood lemming reflect recent colonization by a limited number of founders during the Holocene boreal forest expansion. 4. 9. Chromosome rearrangements do not prevent gene flow in the common shrew, Sorex araneus : Analysis of two chromosomal hybrid zones in Sweden

    Author : Yolanda Narain; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Two chromosomal hybrid zones of the common shrew, Sorex araneus, have been investigated: the Hällefors-Uppsala hybrid zone in central Sweden and the Abisko-Sidensjö hybrid zone in northern Sweden. The Hällefors (Hä) and Uppsala (Up) chromosome races consisted of biarmed autosomes only (2nA=18), and differed in the Robertsonian fusions of two arms, ko, pq, and kp, oq, respectively. READ MORE

  5. 10. Mating structure and nestmate relatedness in primitively social hymenoptera as revealed by microsatellites

    Author : Peter A. Thorén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : Mating structure and nestmate relatedness have been estimated in social Hymenoptera with different levels of sociality. Microsatellite markers have been developed for both communal bees (Andrena scottica) and for primetively eusocial wasps (Vespula rufa). READ MORE
