  1. 11. Physico-Chemical Investigations of, and Characterization of Model Membranes for, Lipid-Peptide Interactions

    Author : Per Wessman; Katarina Edwards; Martin Malmsten; Michel Lafleur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The main focus of this thesis is on the effects caused by α-helical peptides on liposome structure, the impact of cholesterol on the peptide-membrane interactions, and the effect of aggregate curvature on the peptide affinity. Results of the studies show that the membrane destabilizing effect of the cationic α-helical peptide melittin is modulated by cholesterol. READ MORE

  2. 12. Simulation of deformable objects transported in fluid flow

    Author : Arash Alizad Banaei; Luca Brandt; Markus Holzner; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Deformable particles suspended in a viscous fluid can be found in many industrial and biological applications. In this thesis, two different numerical tools have been developed to simulate suspensions of capsules, thin membranes enclosing a second fluid and a rigid nucleus so to work as model for ”Eukaryotic” cells, and flexible slender bodies known as filaments/fibres. 3. 13. Elastic properties of suspended graphene

    Author : Daniel Midtvedt; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns describing the mechanical properties of the two dimensional material graphene by continuum elasticity theory. In particular, Nano ElectroMechanical Systems (NEMS) where part of the graphene sheet is made suspended, are considered. READ MORE

  4. 14. Physico-Chemical Investigations of Bilayer Discs and Related Lipid Structures Formed in Liposomal Systems Intended for Triggered Release

    Author : Maria Sandström; Katarina Edwards; Mats Almgren; Tommy Nylander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physical chemistry; liposome; triggered release; pH-sensitive liposomes; temperature-sensitive liposomes; drug partitioning; cryo-TEM; discs; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes results from fundamental studies of liposomes intended for drug delivery and pH or temperature triggered release. In addition, the effect of lipid composition on bilayer disc formation and a potential application of the bilayer discs were investigated. READ MORE

  5. 15. Molecular organization and in situ assembly of the human skin barrier

    Author : Lianne den Hollander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : A deficient skin barrier function is a characteristic feature of skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis and the ichtyoses. A malformation of the lipid matrix might be a major factor in barrier deficient skin disease. READ MORE
