  1. 1. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins

    Author : Candan Ariöz; Åke Wieslander; Daniel O. Daley; Malcolm East; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Membrane lipids; membrane proteins; anionic lipids; membrane remodeling; intracellular vesicles; model membrane systems; glycosyltransferase; Escherichia coli; lipid composition; fatty acid modification; membrane curvature; bacterial homeoviscous adaptation; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. READ MORE

  2. 2. Xanthophyll Cycle in the Light of Thylakoid Membrane Lipids - Membrane Packing, Curvature Elastic Stress and Enzyme Binding

    Author : Anna Szilagyi; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; steroider; Lipids; steroids; membranes; Lipider; enzymologi; HPLC; laurdan; fluorescence spectroscopy; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; curvature elastic stress; enzyme binding; thylakoid membrane; membrane fluidity; lipid packing; histidine; VDE; zeaxanthin; xanthophyll cycle; mebran;

    Abstract : The xanthophyll cycle involves the light-dependent and reversible conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. The enzyme, violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) catalyses the conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, via the intermediate antheraxanthin. VDE is a membrane-hosted enzyme during its activity. 3. 3. Nucleotide-binding Proteins in the Plant Thylakoid Membrane

    Author : Sophie Heurtel Thuswaldner; Cornelia Spetea Wiklund; Bengt Persson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant; Arabidopsis; photosynthesis; thylakoid membrane; nucleotide-binding; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Life on Earth is dependent on the oxygen produced through photosynthesis. The thylakoid membrane is the site for the light-driven reactions of photosynthesis, which oxidize water and supply energy in the form of ATP, mainly for carbon fixation. The utilization of ATP in the lumenal space of the thylakoid has not been considered in the past. READ MORE

  4. 4. Affinity-, Partition- and Permeability Properties of the Human Red Blood Cell Membrane and Biomembrane Models, with Emphasis on the GLUT1 Glucose Transporter

    Author : Christine Lagerquist Hägglund; Per Lundahl; Jørgen Vinten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Affinity; Aromatic amino acids; Binding; Biomembrane; Biotin; Chromatography; Cytochalasin B; Dihydrocytochalasin B; Dissociation constant; Drug absorption; Ethanol; Equilibrium; Glucose; GLUT1; Immobilization; Immobilized biomembrane affinity chromatography; Immobilized liposome chromatography; Interaction; Liposome; Membrane protein; Membrane vesicle; Partitioning; Phospholipid bilayer; Proteoliposome; Quantitative; Red blood cell; Specific; Streptavidin; Tyrosine; Tryptophan; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : The human glucose transporter GLUT1 is abundant in red blood cells, the blood-brain barrier and epithelial cells, where it mediates the transport of the energy metabolite, glucose. In the present work some properties of GLUT1, including affinity binding of both substrates and inhibitors, transport rates as well as permeabilities of aromatic amino acids and drug-membrane interactions were analyzed by chromatographic methods. 5. 5. Interaction of Calcium Ions with Lipid Membranes

    Author : Baharan Ali Doosti; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; phospholipid bilayer membrane; membrane dynamics; micromanipulation; calcium ions; cell migration.; membrane nanotube; membrane tubular protrusions; calcium ion concentration gradient; membrane bending; giant unilamellar vesicle;

    Abstract : Bilayer membranes enclose and shield the biological cell and its inner compartments, as well as the tubular networks that exist within and between the cells. Due to their fluidic nature, the membranes are incredibly dynamic and flexible, which allows them to bend, reshape and fuse in response to mechanical and chemical stimuli within their natural microenvironments.
