1. Quality of Frozen Rainbow Trout. Effects of different freezing and thawing treatments
Abstract : The effects of different freezing, frozen storage and thawing treatments on the muscle tissue of farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhychus mykiss) were studied. Biochemical measurements were correlated to sensory estimated quality changes. The freezing process affects the proteins, the lipid fractions and the membrane structures in the fish muscle. READ MORE

2. Cytotoxic Cyclotides : Structure, Activity, and Mode of Action
Abstract : Cyclotides are small cyclic plant proteins, and this thesis addresses their cytotoxic structure-activity properties and their mode of action on human cancer cell lines. Cyclotides were isolated from Viola odorata and Viola tricolor; three novel cyclotide sequences and two known sequences, but of new origin, were identified using mass spectrometry, amino acid analysis, and Edman degradation. 3. Probing the Nano-Bio Interface Using Surface Based Analytical Techniques
Abstract : In recent years, the use of manufactured nanomaterials has been rapidly increasing in a wide range of application areas. Among others, these areas of application include cosmetics, medicine, clothing, and sporting goods. The small size of nanomaterials offers unique properties that are not possible to obtain by the same material in bulk. READ MORE

4. Mass Transport in Wood Disintegration: Implications for the Pulp and Paper Industry
Abstract : Efficient delignification and fractionation processes are essential in the pulp and paper industry. Mass transport events in wood fractionation are of great importance, specifically in two main stages, namely, the mass transport of chemicals into wood and the mass transport of degraded lignin molecules out of cellulose confinements. 5. Physico-Chemical Investigations of Bilayer Discs and Related Lipid Structures Formed in Liposomal Systems Intended for Triggered Release
Abstract : This thesis describes results from fundamental studies of liposomes intended for drug delivery and pH or temperature triggered release. In addition, the effect of lipid composition on bilayer disc formation and a potential application of the bilayer discs were investigated. READ MORE
