16. Pathogenic effects of alpha-synuclein: modifications and toxicity
Abstract : Accumulation of intraneuronal inclusions, containing mainly a protein called alpha-synuclein (asyn), is thought to play a critical role in neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD). In these so called Lewy bodies, the majority of asyn is phosphorylated at serine 129 (pS129) suggesting that post-translational modifications may play a critical role in the process of aggregate formation. 17. Interactions between neural retina, retinal epithelium and choroid
Abstract : The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a non-replicating monolayer that plays a key role nursing the photoreceptors of the neural retina, regulating fluid movement within the subretinal space, maintaining a basal laminar layer of Bruch s membrane, and influencing the choriocapillaris. This project investigates how surgical manipulation of the retinal epithelial layer influences the neural retina, the choroid and the epithelial layer itself. READ MORE

18. Dealing with damaged lysosomes : Impact of lysosomal membrane stability in health and disease
Abstract : The lysosome is the main unit for degradation and plays important roles in various cellular processes, such as nutrient sensing, cholesterol regulation and cell death. Consequently, altered lysosomal function contributes to, or even causes, several diseases. READ MORE

19. Micro- and Nanostructures for Studies of Model Biological Systems
Abstract : Sub-cellular biological components are complex systems that work together to control and maintain cellular activity and health. It is useful to study the basic elements that constitute the sub-cellular components using model systems, which mimic certain parts of the overall system, in order to better understand the system as a whole. 20. Molecular Mechanisms Optimizing Photosynthesis during High Light Stress in Plants
Abstract : Oxygenic photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae and cyanobacteria use solar energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into molecular oxygen and carbohydrates. Photosynthesis sustains life on Earth since it provides not only energy for individual growth, but also represents the starting point of the food chain for most living organisms. READ MORE
