1. Porous polymeric materials for chromatography : Synthesis, functionalization and characterization
Abstract : Background: Separation science is heavily reliant on materials to fulfill ever more complicated demands raised by other areas of science, notably the rapidly expanding molecular biosciences and environmental monitoring. The key to successful separations lies in a combination of physical properties and surface chemistry of stationary phases used in liquid chromatographic separation, and this thesis address both aspects of novel separation materials. 2. Characterization of iron ore green pellets by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microtomography
Abstract : Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), image analysis (IA) of SEM micrographs and X-ray microtomography (XMT) were used to obtain new information about the morphology of iron ore green pellets in this work. Cryo-SEM and freeze fracturing was used to observe entrapped air bubbles and arrangement of particles around the bubbles and in the matrix of wet green pellets. READ MORE

3. Monolithic separation media synthesized in capillaries and their applications for molecularly imprinted networks
Abstract : The thesis describes the synthesis of chromatographic media using several different approaches, their characterizations and applications in liquid chromatography. The steps to achieve a separation column for a specific analyte are presented. The main focus of the study was the design of novel molecularly imprinted polymers. READ MORE

4. Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging of Turbid Media
Abstract : This thesis deals with optical spectroscopy and imaging of complex and strongly scattering turbid media. Focus is mainly placed on three topics, being i) diffuse optical spectroscopy of choroidal tumors, ii) gas spectroscopy in scattering materials using the GASMAS (gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy) technique, and iii) luminescence diffuse optical imaging and tomography of tissues. 5. Phase transitions in porous media studied by NMR
Abstract : This Thesis presents studies of phase transitions ocurring in porous media. The investigated phase transitions include melting/crystallization, surface pre-melting and liquid-liquid phase separation of binary mixtures. READ MORE
