1. Studies on pain-related messengers and receptors in dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord
Abstract : Pain is the most common reason why people seek medical advice. A large group of patients suffering from so-called neuropathic pain, due to injury to the nervous system itself, is often not helped by the currently available therapies. Classical analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may have severe side effects. READ MORE

2. Neuropeptides, 'gaseous' messengers and classic transmitters : electrophysiological and histochemical studies on coexistence and interactions in the nervous system
Abstract : The distribution and functional role of neuropeptides were studied, with special reference to galanin (GAL) and the free radical nitric oxide (NO). In developing systems GAL expression was observed already at E14 in trigeminal and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons and at E15 in sensory epithelia in ear, eye and nose, as well as at E19 during bone formation. 3. Studies of cAMP and Ca2+ signaling in pancreatic islet cells
Abstract : The blood glucose-lowering and -elevating hormones insulin and glucagon are released from the pancreatic islet β- and α-cells, respectively. The intracellular messengers Ca2+ and cAMP have central roles in controlling the secretion of both hormones, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. READ MORE

4. Synthesis and Development of Methods for Preparation of Inositolphosphoglycans, Glycoglycerolipids and Glycerophospholipids
Abstract : This thesis describes the synthesis of a series of myo-inositol-containing oligosaccharides, and the exploration of using the chiral epoxide (S)-glycidol in short synthetic routes to glycoglycerolipids and glycerophospholipids. In chapter 2, synthesis of the core heptasaccharyl myo-inositol Galp(α1-6)Galp(α1 -3)Galf(β1-3)[Glcp(α1-P04-6)Manp](α1-3)Manp(α1-4)GlcNp(α1-6)Ins-1-P04, found in the lipophosphoglycans of Leishmania parasites, is described. 5. Structures and Processes at the Mercury Magnetopause
Abstract : The mechanism involved in the transfer of energy, momentum and plasma from the solar wind to any planetary magnetosphere is considered one of the more important topics in space plasma physics. With the use of the Mercury spacecraft MESSENGER’s (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) data, it has been possible to study these processes in an environment different, yet similar, to Earth’s.
