  1. 1. Sex steroid metabolism and body composition

    Author : Charlotte Swanson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : UDP glucuronosyltranferases; polymorphisms; androgens; glucuronidated androgen metabolites; fat mass; bone; metabolic risk factors; population study;

    Abstract : Background: The bioactive androgens testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) regulate bone and fat mass in men. The effects of androgens are largely determined by the rate of their synthesis and inactivation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Prostate Diseases and the Metabolic Syndrome

    Author : Mohammad-Ali Haghsheno; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate Cancer; Metabolic Syndrome; Vitamin D; Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; Osteocalcin;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT The overall aim of this thesis was to explore the association between the components of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), including vitamin D, and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The focus was on the relationship between diseases of the prostate, mainly benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and prostate cancer (PC). READ MORE

  3. 3. Studies on nutrition, body composition and bone mineralization in healthy 8-yr-olds in an urban Swedish community

    Author : Susanne Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; body composition; bone mineralization; dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; healthy; lipids; metabolic markers; overweight; physical activity;

    Abstract : Background: The incidence of welfare diseases including overweight in childhood is increasing worldwide. The results from a study of healthy pre-school children showed that in a population with well educated parents 17% of the children were overweight or obese at the age of 4 years. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metabolic responsiveness to growth hormone in children

    Author : Ralph Decker; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Individualized treatment; Growth hormone; Hormonal responsiveness; Metabolic outcome; Prediction model; Body composition; Insulin sensitivity; Leptin; Proteomics SELDI; Apolipoproteins; Thresholds of growth hormone effects; Protein patterns;

    Abstract : Metabolic effects of growth hormone (GH) therapy in short children have not been clearly established owing to the previous lack of controlled trials studying the metabolic outcome in response to different GH doses despite the known effects of GH on insulin sensitivity, lipid profile, and body composition. It has previously been shown that individualized GH doses during catch-up growth significantly reduce the proportion of unexpectedly good and poor responders around a predefined individual growth target in short prepubertal children. 5. 5. Bone and fat tissue in children and adolescents: studies with focus on osteocalcin

    Author : Bojan Tubić; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; osteocalcin; obesity; adiponectin; carboxylation; anorexia nervosa; paediatric; bone turnover markers; bone mass; whole body vibration; muscle;

    Abstract : The general AIM was to investigate the possible interplay between bone and fat tissue through clinical studies of children and adolescents. Osteocalcin (OC), a bone formation marker, has been proposed to act as a link between bone and energy metabolism in mice, but human data are inconclusive. READ MORE
