    Abstract : Dietary fat quality influences the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A low-grade inflammation is suggested to contribute to the disease development, often accompanied by obesity. Whereas n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been considered anti-inflammatory, n-6 PUFA have been proposed to act pro-inflammatory. READ MORE

  2. 2. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation

    Author : Ulf Risérus; Keith Frayn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Metabolic syndrome; dietary fatty acids; conjugated linoleic acid; insulin resistance; oxidative stress; inflammation; cardiovascular disease; dyslipidemia; abdominal obesity; type 2 diabetes; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; Nutrition; näringslära;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. READ MORE

  3. 3. THE VASOPRESSIN SYSTEM IN DIABETES MELLITUS, OBESITY AND THE METABOLIC SYNDROME

    Author : Sofia Enhörning; Kardiovaskulär forskning - hypertoni; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; arginine vasopressin; copeptin; prediction; epidemiology; diabetes mellitus; risk factors; abdominal obesity; obesity; metabolic syndrome; microalbuminuria; AVPR1A; AVPR1B;

    Abstract : Background: Animal studies suggest that the arginine vasopressin (AVP) system plays a role in glucose and fat metabolism, but data from humans are limited. Method and results: We analysed plasma copeptin (copeptin), a stable C-terminal fragment of the AVP pro-hormone in the large, Swedish, population-based cohort Malmö Diet and Cancer Study Cardiovascular Cohort (MDC-CC, n=6103). 4. 4. Obesity, Sleep and Sleep-disordered Breathing

    Author : Andreas Palm; Eva Lindberg; Christer Janson; Ludger Grote; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sleep; Obesity; Obstructive Sleep Apnea; Obesity Hypoventilation syndrome; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Background: Sleep problems are associated with impaired quality of life and daytime sleepiness. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS), are associated with metabolic changes and an increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. READ MORE

  5. 5. Polycystic ovary syndrome : A study on factors of potential impact on body fat and carbohydrate metabolism

    Author : Gianluca Gennarelli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstetrics and gynaecology; polycystic ovary syndrome; androgens; insulin; insulin resistance; body fat distribution; hypoglycaemia; adrenal; cortisol; ACTH; leptin; gestational diabetes mellitus; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and women s diseases; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to investigate some factors underlying the metabolic, anthropometric, and endocrine abnormalities of women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).An iv insulin tolerance test (0.15 IU bolus) showed substantially preserved glucose counterregulation in women with PCOS (n=18).
