  1. 1. Multivariate profiling of metabolites in human disease : Method evaluation and application to prostate cancer

    Author : Elin Thysell; Henrik Antti; Janne Lehtiö; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolite profiling; metabolomics; predictive metabolomics; mass spectrometry; GC-MS; biomarkers; chemometrics; design of experiments; multivariate data analysis; prostate cancer; bone metastases; plasma; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : There is an ever increasing need of new technologies for identification of molecular markers for early diagnosis of fatal diseases to allow efficient treatment. In addition, there is great value in finding patterns of metabolites, proteins or genes altered in relation to specific disease conditions to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of disease development. Abstract : Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activities are driving climate change, but the pending crisis could be mitigated by a circular carbon economy where released CO2 is recycled into commodity chemicals. Autotrophic microbes can make a contribution by producing chemicals, such as biofuels, from CO2 and renewable energy. READ MORE

  3. 3. Metabolic variation in autoimmune diseases

    Author : Rasmus Kirkegaard Madsen; Johan Trygg; Thomas Moritz; Torbjörn Lundstedt; Matej Oresic; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Rheumatoid Arthritis; Diabetes Mellitus type 1; Metabolic Profiling; Metabolomics; Chemometrics; Multivariate Data Analysis; Mass Spectrometry; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : The human being and other animals contain immensely complex biochemical processes that govern their function on a cellular level. It is estimated that several thousand small molecules (metabolites) are produced by various biochemical pathways in humans. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metabolic profiling of meat and fish and their impact on human metabolism

    Author : ANDREW VINCENT; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Foodomics; meat; herring; metabolomics; fish;

    Abstract : High intake of meat is frequently associated with increased risk of disease, while the opposite is true for fish; yet few studies have compared meat and fish in terms of both its composition of low-molecular weight (LMW) molecules and its effects on metabolite concentrations in humans. The work presented in this thesis aimed to use metabolomics to get a holistic overview of compositional differences between fish and meat, and the effects of dietary fish or meat intake on human metabolism. 5. 5. Structural and functional studies of enzymes in nucleotide metabolism : a detailed investigation of two enzymes and interaction profiling of FDA-approved nucleoside analog drugs with 23 enzymes

    Author : Louise Egeblad; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Enzymes in nucleotide metabolism serve as the producers of the building blocks for DNA and RNA. From a medical perspective, nucleotide metabolism, and in particular salvage pathway enzymes, have attracted special interest, as nucleoside prodrugs given in the treatment of cancer and HIV are converted into their active metabolite forms by these enzymes.
