  1. 21. GC-MS based metabolomics – Development of a next generation GC-MS method and its application to nutrition and biomarker research

    Author : Otto Savolainen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gas chromatography; nutrition; biomarkers; metabolomics; mass spectrometry; type 2 diabetes;

    Abstract : Metabolomics, the measurement of a broad range of small molecules in a sample, is maturing as a field in analytical chemistry and becoming a standard research tool in biological sciences for helping to generate a wider understanding of the complex biological mechanisms behind, for example, development of disease and effects of diet on health. Metabolomics analysis is generally divided into either targeted or untargeted metabolomics. READ MORE

  2. 22. Image-based multi-omics data integration : Exploring whole-body PET/MRI, -omics data and body composition

    Author : Robin Visvanathar; Håkan Ahlström; Joel Kullberg; Jan Eriksson; Katrine Riklund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Body composition; Imiomics; genomics; metabolomics; MRI; PET; insulin sensitivity; T2D;

    Abstract : Advanced body composition analysis with whole-body imaging could uncover novel associations between regional tissue composition and metabolic disease. Imiomics is an automated image analysis framework that enables large-scale integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and orthogonal technologies such as metabolomics and genomics for the detailed study of body composition.     Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; insulin resistance; diabetes; insulin secretion; cardiovascular; mendelian randomization; proteomics; metabolomics; genomics; molecular epidemiology; complex disease; risk prediction; coronary heart disease; stroke; hyperglycemia;

    Abstract : The worldwide increasing number of persons affected by largely preventable diseases like diabetes demands better prevention and treatment. Insulin is required for effective utilisation of circulating nutrients. READ MORE

  4. 24. Metabolic profiling of meat and fish and their impact on human metabolism

    Author : ANDREW VINCENT; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Foodomics; meat; herring; metabolomics; fish;

    Abstract : High intake of meat is frequently associated with increased risk of disease, while the opposite is true for fish; yet few studies have compared meat and fish in terms of both its composition of low-molecular weight (LMW) molecules and its effects on metabolite concentrations in humans. The work presented in this thesis aimed to use metabolomics to get a holistic overview of compositional differences between fish and meat, and the effects of dietary fish or meat intake on human metabolism. 5. 25. Environmental, nutritional and endocrine regulation of metabolic processes in fish

    Author : Andreas Kullgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : lipids; metabolism; temperature; fasting; growth hormone; ghrelin; NMR; metabolomics; Salmo salar; Oncorhynchus mykiss;

    Abstract : Due to seasonal variations in temperature and food availability, fish in temperate regions should be able to make metabolic adjustments to ensure that enough energy is available for the maintenance of basal processes. The major aim of this thesis was to elucidate how the physiology and lipid metabolism of salmonid fish is affected by temperature and food availability, and to clarify aspects of the endocrine control of lipid metabolism.
