  1. 1. Microstructural, Mechanical and Tribological Characterisation of CVD and PVD Coatings for Metal Cutting Applications

    Author : Mikael Fallqvist; Staffan Jacobsson; Mikael Olsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tribology; Friction; Wear; Coatings; CVD; PVD; Alumina; Metal cutting; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials; Steel Forming and Surface Engineering;

    Abstract : The present thesis focuses on characterisation of microstructure and the resulting mechanical and tribological properties of CVD and PVD coatings used in metal cutting applications. These thin and hard coatings are designed to improve the tribological performance of cutting tools which in metal cutting operations may result in improved cutting performance, lower energy consumption, lower production costs and lower impact on the environment. 2. 2. Surface Engineering in Sheet Metal Forming

    Author : Per Carlsson; Mikael Olsson; Niklas Axén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Materials science; Friction; wear; metal coated steel sheet; dry lubricants; galling; PVD coatings; Materialvetenskap; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap; materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : In recent years, surface engineering techniques have been developed in order to improve the tribological performance in many industrial applications. In sheet metal forming processes, the usage of liquid lubricants can be decreased by using self lubricated tribo surfaces which will result in more environmentally friendly workshops. READ MORE

  3. 3. Toward Energy-efficient Physical Vapor Deposition : Routes for Replacing Substrate Heating during Magnetron Sputtering by Employing Metal Ion Irradiation

    Author : Xiao Li; Grzegorz Greczynski; Ivan Petrov; Lars Hultman; Jyh-Wei Lee; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PVD; Magnetron sputtering; Thin films; HiPIMS; TiAlN; Energy efficiency;

    Abstract : In this Thesis, magnetron sputtering is perfected as an environmental-friendly deposition technique. I performed systematic studies of a novel approach - hybrid high-power impulse and dc magnetron co-sputtering (HiPIMS/DCMS) with metal-ion-synchronized substrate bias pulses. READ MORE

  4. 4. Formation and Function of Low-Friction Tribofilms

    Author : Harald Skiöld Nyberg; Staffan Jacobson; Allan Matthews; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tribology; tribofilm; PVD; coating; low-friction; tungsten disulphide; transition metal dichalcogenide; tribochemistry; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot tribomaterial; Engineering Science with specialization in Tribo Materials;

    Abstract : The use of low-friction coatings on machine elements is steadily increasing, and they are expected to play an important role in the reduction of fuel consumption of future motorized vehicles. Many low-friction coatings function by transformation of the outermost coating layer into tribofilms, which then cover the coating surface and its counter surface. READ MORE

  5. 5. Triboactive Low-Friction Coatings Based on Sulfides and Carbides

    Author : Jill Sundberg; Ulf Jansson; Jochen M. Schneider; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coatings; thin films; tribology; tungsten disulfide; transition metal dichalcogenide; nanocomposite; TiC a-C; tribofilms; PVD; XPS; HAXPES; XRD; SEM; TEM; Raman spectroscopy; nanoindentation; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry;

    Abstract : For sustainable development, it is highly important to limit the loss of energy and materials in machines used for transportation, manufacturing, and other purposes. Large improvements can be achieved by reducing friction and wear in machine elements, for example by the application of coatings. READ MORE
