1. Finite element modelling of the mechanics of solid foam materials
Abstract : Failure of bi-material interfaces is studied with the aim to quantify the influence of the induced stress concentrations on the strength of the interfaces. A simple point-stress criterion, used in conjunction with finite element calculations, is evaluated to provide strength predictions for bi-material bonded joints and inserts in polymer foam. 2. Catalytic reactions with palladium supported on mesocellular foam : Applications in hydrogenation, isomerization, and C-C bond forming reactions
Abstract : The major part of this thesis concerns the development of catalytic methodologies based on palladium nanoparticles immobilized on aminopropyl-functionalized siliceous mesocellular foam (Pd0-AmP-MCF). The catalytic activity of the precursor to the nanocatalyst, PdII-AmP-MCF is also covered by this work. READ MORE

3. Improving selectivity in protein extraction by subtle interactions and environmental changes
Abstract : The challenges for efficient bioprocesses lie in developing and adapting further current technologies or in creating innovative separation technologies. The thesis is based on the studies on protein recovery from crude feedstocks by extraction in aqueous two-phase systems and detergent foam, respectively. READ MORE

4. Transition Metal-Catalyzed Redox Reactions : A Journey from Homogeneous Ruthenium to Heterogeneous Palladium Catalysis
Abstract : The first part of the thesis covers the development and utilization of electronically modified (pentaarylcyclopentadienyl)Ru-complexes in the racemization of secondary alcohols. This study revealed that the electronic properties of the substrate were the main factors dictating whether β-hydride elimination or hydride re-addition becomes the rate-determining step of the racemization process. 5. Structured Carbon-Alkaline Earth Metal Halides Composites for Ammonia Storage
Abstract : NOx (NO, NO2) is one of the most harmful air-pollutants from exhaust, resulting in series of environmental problems as well as severe healthy issues for human beings. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is a common approach to eliminate NOx onboard by using ammonia as a reductant. READ MORE
