  1. 1. Metal accumulation by plants : evaluation of the use of plants in stormwater treatment

    Author : Åsa Fritioff; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Bert Wolterbeek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elodea canadensis; Potamogeton natans; uptake; translocation; distribution; toxicity; salinity; temperature; and leakage; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Metal contaminated stormwater, i.e. surface runoff in urban areas, can be treated in percolation systems, ponds, or wetlands to prevent the release of metals into receiving waters. Plants in such systems can, for example, attenuate water flow, bind sediment, and directly accumulate metals. READ MORE

  2. 2. Heavy metal contamination and toxicity : Studies of Macroalgae from the Tanzanian Coast

    Author : Florence Alex Mamboya; Mats Björk; Nils Ekelund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heavy metals; Padina gymnospora; Ulva reticulata; salinity; nutrients; proteins; uptake; growth; Fv Fm; Zanzibar Channel; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Concentrations of various metals are elevated above background levels in several intertidal areas along the Tanzanian coasts. However, there is little available information concerning the toxicity of these metals and how the uptake of these metals by bioindicators are influenced by external factors, such as heavy rains and increased coastal eutrophication, which tend to fluctuate. 3. 3. Surface reactivity of metal nanoparticles : - importance of surface active agents and biomolecules from a transformation, mobility and toxicity perspective

    Author : Sara Skoglund; Inger Odnevall Wallinder; Lars Österlund; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metal nanoparticles; surfactants; metal release; characterization; size distribution; nanotoxicology; risk assessment; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Metallic nanoparticles possess unique properties due to their size and are widely used in e.g. consumer products. From this follows a need to identify and assess potential risks of human and environmental exposure. READ MORE

  4. 4. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands

    Author : Johanna Nyquist; Maria Greger; Hans Brix; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; treatment wetlands; stormwater; AMD; metal uptake; wetland plants; Biology; Biologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated. 5. 5. Transport in Oxides Studied by Gas Phase Analysis

    Author : Qian Dong; Gunnar Hultquist; W.J. Quadakkers; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Gas Phase Analysis; metal; oxide; platinum; vitreous silica; yttria stabilized zirconia; diatomic gas; oxidation; dissociation; permeation; uptake release.; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The transport in oxides is studied by the use of gas phase analysis (GPA). An experimental method to identify transported species of gases and their contribution to the overall transport of gases in oxides and an experimental method to evaluate the parameters diffusivity, concentration, permeability of gases in oxides and effective pore size in oxides are developed, respectively.
