  1. 1. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges

    Author : Eva Sörenson; Catherine Legrand; Elin Lindehoff; Jarone Pinhassi; Sonya Dyhrman; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Interactions; phytoplankton; microalgae; bacteria; communities; aquatic; diversity; functions; structure; species-specific; microbiome; core microbiome; response diversity; resilience; resource partitioning; competition; coexistence; amplicon sequencing; metatranscriptome; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 2. 2. Microbial Ecosystem Functions Along the Steep Oxygen Gradient of the Landsort Deep, Baltic Sea

    Author : Petter Thureborn; Sara Sjöling; Mats Grahn; Matthias Labrenz; Södertörns högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial ecology; ecosystem functions; microbial community; bacteria; archaea; metagenomics; metatranscriptomics; oxygen gradient; hypoxia; sediment; Baltic Sea; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Abstract : Through complex metabolic interactions aquatic microbial life is essential as a driver of ecosystem functions and hence a prerequisite for sustaining plant and animal life in the sea and on Earth. Despite its ecological importance, information on the complexity of microbial functions and how these are related to environmental conditions is limited. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effects and Dynamics of Insertion Sequences in the Evolution of Cyanobacteria

    Author : Carl Theoden Vigil Stenman; Birgitta Bergman; Andersson Siv; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Insertion Sequences; Evolution; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Cyanobacteria are globally widespread and ecologically highly significant photoautotrophic microorganisms, with diverse geno- and phenotypic characters unprecedented among prokaryotes. This phylum embraces representatives with an exclusive adaptability in highly specialized environments, from oligotrophic ocean waters to the interior of cells in symbiotic plants, the most extreme being the chloroplasts. 4. 4. Ultrasound and molecular biomarkers for prediction of preterm delivery in different risk groups of singleton pregnancies

    Author : Tove Wikström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cervical length measurement; preterm birth; ; second trimester; screening; cost-effectiveness analyzes; progesterone; human microbiome; ; transcriptome; gene expression profiles; microRNA;

    Abstract : Ultrasound and molecular biomarkers for prediction of preterm delivery in women with a singleton pregnancy Tove Wikström Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Institute of Clinical Sciences Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg Gothenburg, Sweden Background: Preterm delivery (PTD) is the leading cause of death in children under five years of age. Spontaneous PTD (sPTD) might be partly preventable by treating asymptomatic women having a short cervical length (CL) with vaginal progesterone. READ MORE
