1. Microbial Production of Bio-Based Chemicals: A Biorefinery Perspective
Abstract : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. READ MORE

2. Combustion dynamics and melt dripping of ethylene-acrylate copolyer composites
Abstract : The degradation and combustion of blends of ethylene-acryalte copolymer with calcium carbonate and silicone were studied by a combination of flammability tests, in-situ measurements and analytical experiments. Compounds of poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) blended with precipitated calcium carbonate nanoparticles were prepared. READ MORE

3. Polyelectrolytes and Polycomplexes in Biotechnology
Abstract : Polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are characterized by many useful properties that endow them with high potential in different areas of biotechnology. This thesis describes the development and analyses of some new systems and methods utilizing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA), poly (N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) (PEVP) and PMA-PEVP complexes. 4. Phase Behavior and Solution Properties of Aqueous Polyion-Surfactant Ion Systems
Abstract : Polyelectrolytes and oppositely charged surfactants interact through attractive electrostatic forces, which in many cases lead to phase separation already at low total concentrations. During the past 10-15 years investigations of these systems have been simplified through the use of complex salts that consist of surfactants with polymeric counterions in a 1:1 charge stoichiometry (no excess simple counterions present). 5. Heterogeneous Film-Forming Latexes : Preparation - Morphology - Mechanical Properties
Abstract : This thesis describes the preparation of heterogeneous latexes, which may serve as binders in coating applications, and the characterization of these. The latexes were prepared in two-stage seeded emulsion polymerization. READ MORE
