  1. 1. Mercury species transformations in marine and biological systems studied by isotope dilution mass spectrometry and stable isotope tracers

    Author : Lars Lambertsson; Wolfgang Frech; John Munthe; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; Mercury; methylmercury; ethylmercury; Thimerosal; speciation; methylation; demethylation; brackish water sediment; natural waters; GC-ICP-MS; species-specific isotope dilution; isotope enriched tracers; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the implementation of species-specific isotope dilution (SSID) methodology and stable isotope tracers to determine mercury species occurrence and transformation processes in-situ and during sample treatment. Isotope enriched tracers of methyl-, ethyl- and inorganic mercury were synthesised and applied in different combinations to marine and biological samples. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the reliability of methods for the speciation of mercury based on chromatographic separation coupled to atomic spectrometric detection

    Author : Johanna Qvarnström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Analytical chemistry; Mercury; speciation; hyphenated techniques; HPLC; CE; GC; CV-AAS; ICP-MS; species-specific enriched stable isotope; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the reliability of methods for the speciation of mercury in environmental and biological samples. Problems with speciation methods that couple chromatography to atomic spectrometric detection and how to overcome the problems are discussed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metal fate and sensitivity in the aquatic tropical vegetable Ipomoea aquatica

    Author : Agneta Göthberg; Maria Greger; Hans Borg; M.N.V. Prasad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic plants; vegetables; methyl mercury; metal accumulation; metal effects; thiol-rich peptides; Ipomoea aquatica; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The aquatic plant Ipomoea aquatica is a popular vegetable in Southeast Asia, often cultivated in nutrient rich and polluted waters. The overall aim of this thesis was to estimate potential risks for human health and reduced plant growth due to accumulation and toxicity of total-Hg, methyl-Hg, Cd and Pb. READ MORE

  5. 5. Developmental Neurotoxicity in Mice Neonatally Co-exposed to Environmental Agents : PCB, PBDE, Methyl Mercury and Ionized Radiation - Interactions and Effects

    Author : Celia Fischer; Per Eriksson; Anders Fredriksson; Richard Seegal; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biology; PCB; PBDE; MeHg; ionized radiation; neonatal; development; neurotoxicity; behavior; cholinergic system; Biologi;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the neurotoxic effects in mice neonatally co-exposed to different toxic environmental agents during a defined critical period of the brains's rapid growth and development. Environmental toxic agents are incorporated in our environment. READ MORE
