  1. 11. Pharmacogenetic studies of thiopurine methyltransferase genotype-phenotype concordance and effect of methotrexate on thiopurine metabolism

    Author : Anna Zimdahl; Malin Lindqvist Appell; Lars-Göran Mårtensson; Inger Johansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The thiopurines (6-mercaptopurine [6-MP], 6-thioguanine and azathioprine) are cytotoxic drugs used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), inflammatory bowel diseases, certain autoimmune diseases and after transplantation. The metabolism of thiopurines is complex with several enzymes involved in the conversion into active drug metabolites. READ MORE

  2. 12. O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase and DNA mismatch repair in relation to drug resistance in malignant melanoma

    Author : Shuhua Ma; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Melanoma; chemotherapy; dacarbazine; drug resistance; O6-methylguanineDNAmethyltransferase; DNA mismatch repair;

    Abstract : Although the survival rate of patients with malignant melanoma has improved, treatment of the disease poses large problems since disseminated melanoma frequently shows primary resistance to chemotherapy. Resistance to chemotherapy is thus a major clinical problem and a cause of failure in the treatment of metastatic malignant melanoma. READ MORE

  3. 13. Pancreatic Endocrine Tumors and GIST - Clinical Markers, Epidemiology and Treatment

    Author : Sara Ekeblad; Britt Skogseid; Peter Stålberg; Barbro Eriksson; Rajesh Thakker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Pancreatic endocrine tumor; Gastrointestinal stromal tumor; Neuroendocrine; Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1; Prognostic factors; Temozolomide; TNM staging; O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase; Growth hormone secretagogue receptor; Ghrelin; Medicin;

    Abstract : Pancreatic endocrine tumors and gastrointestinal stromal tumors are rare. Evidence regarding prognostic factors, and in the former also treatment, is scarce. We evaluated the survival and prognostic factors in a consecutive series of 324 patients with pancreatic endocrine tumors treated at a single institution. READ MORE

  4. 14. On the association between panic disorder and autonomic regulation – With special focus on the roles of respiration and on the catechol-O-methyltransferase gene

    Author : Kristina Annerbrink; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : panic disorder; serotonin; respiration; polymorphism; COMT Val158Met; HCRTR2 G1246A; blood pressure; anthropometry;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Panic disorder is a psychiatric disorder characterized by sudden attacks of intense anxiety. It displays a lot of features suggesting that it may be associated with an underlying aberration in the autonomic regulation of heart activity and respiration: i) the attacks are often characterized by respiratory symptoms and symptoms from the heart, ii) the attacks can be elicited by respiratory stimulants, iii) between attacks, patients with panic disorder often display enhanced respiratory variability and reduced heart rate variability, and iv) patients with panic disorder display enhanced prevalence of respiratory disorders and enhanced mortality in cardiovascular disease. 5. 15. Structural enzymology of the biosynthesis of polyketide antibiotics

    Author : Anna Jansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : X-ray crystallography; anthracycline; polyketide; Streptomyces; S-adenosyl-Lmethionine; methyltransferase; hydroxylase; aldol-condensation.;

    Abstract : Anthracyclines are an important group of aromatic antibiotics that exhibit antitumour activity, which makes them useful in treatment of various cancers. They are synthesised in the polyketide biosynthetic pathway as secondary metabolites by different Streptomyces species. READ MORE
