16. Protein modification with hydrophobic prenyl groups in malignant cells
Abstract : Mevalonate (MVA) is the key intermediate in the isoprene synthetic pathway leading to the formation of a number of biologically important lipid molecules. It is well known that inhibition of MVA synthesis blocks the cell cycle progression of mammalian cells, a fact suggesting that some isoprenoids derived from MVA are required for cell proliferation. 17. Novel Modes of Immune Activation in Anopheles gambiae and Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract : Malaria is a disease of poverty and continues to plague a great part of the world’s population. An increased understanding of the interactions between the vector mosquito, the malaria parasite, and also the mosquito gut microbiota are pivotal for the development of novel measures against the disease. 18. Engineering Yeast Metabolism for Production of Sesquiterpenes
Abstract : Sesquiterpenes belong to the large and diverse group of isoprenoids, which are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom and have various applications in the chemical industry as fragrances, pharmaceuticals and as substitutes for petroleum-based gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. In this project, production of sesquiterpenes was studied in Saccharomyces cerevisiae using farnesene as an example with the objective to gain new insights into the synthesis of these compounds and to evaluate different metabolic engineering strategies. 19. Importance of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor and EWS/FLI-1 fusion protein in growth and survival of two different types of neuroectodermal tumor cells
Abstract : Treatment with comparatively low doses of the 3-hydroxy-3-metylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor lovastatin caused growth arrest in both melanoma cells and Ewing's sarcoma (ES) cells. In melanoma cells growth inhibition was correlated with a drastic decrease in N-linked glycosylation of the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), which in turn was followed by a decreased expression of IGF-1 binding sites at the cell surface. 20. Hepatic lipase and dolichol esterification
Abstract : Dolichol is one of the mevalonate pathway end products, present in all tissues and cellular membranes. The lipid is a primary alcohol consisting of 16-23 isoprenoid residues and occurs as a free alcohol, monophosphate or fatty acyl ester. READ MORE
