1. Micro-scale studies of wear
Abstract : The development of materials for tribological components is constantly striving to more sophisticated properties, specialised for specific applications. This progress requires and depends to a large extent on a parallel development of the theoretical knowledge of wear and on development of the experimental tools for investigating wear in the research lab as well as in the field. 2. Ageing of Asphalt Mixtures : Micro-scale and mixture morphology investigation
Abstract : There are many variables that affect the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures with time, among which age hardening may be considered one of the important ones. Age hardening of asphalt mixtures is an irreversible process, which contributes to a reduction of the durability of pavements and eventually increases the maintenance cost. READ MORE

3. Colliding asperities : a tribological event on micro scale
Abstract : In order to predict and optimize energy efficiency, fuel consumption and service life, friction and wear need to be predetermined with higher accuracy than what is possible today. This prediction and optimization is crucial for the development of sustainable mechanical components and systems with excellent environmental performance. READ MORE

5. Micro-scale Platforms for Investigations of Biological Structures
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of innovative micro-scale platforms as a means to address the current challenges within the field of cell biology, and to provide an interface between miniaturized analytical technology and experimental systems for the life sciences. The work includes an analytical platform for rapid assessment of the viability of adherent single cells; a surface patterning strategy for investigations of cell-to-cell communication via protrusions; a versatile microfluidic probe in SU-8 hard-polymer, and a microfabricated millimeter-wave measurement system for the identification and characterization of niosome (non-ionic surfactant vesicle) constituents, which is operated in a label-free, non-invasive manner.
