  1. 1. Ecological effects of pesticides in freshwater model ecosystems

    Author : Lina Wendt-Rasch; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; Hydrobiology; community; zooplankton; algae; herbicide; insecticide; pesticide mixture; macrophytes; cypermethrin; metsulfuron-methyl; risk assessment; pesticides; microcosms; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis I have investigated the effects of pesticide exposure on the ecosystem level using various types of experimental ecosystems, i.e. microcosms. The direct effect of exposure to cyperemthrin, a pyretroid insecticide, was a rapid decrease of crustancean zooplankton in enclosures in a lake. READ MORE

  2. 2. Determination of the Environmental Fate of Drug Substances and the Matrix Effects of Complex Samples in SFC/ESI-MS

    Author : Alfred Haglind; Curt Pettersson; Mikael Hedeland; Torbjörn Arvidsson; Deirdre Cabooter; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SFC-MS; matrix effect; ion cluster; Supercritical fluid chromatography; ESI; chiral separation; transformation products; LC-QToF; wetland microcosms; Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Analytisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Abstract : Awareness of the potential problems caused by drug compounds in the environment has increased over the last decade, both among researchers and with the public. This thesis describes the development of analytical methods and their application to wetlands constructed for purification of wastewater from e.g. drug compounds. READ MORE

  3. 3. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities

    Author : Kerstin Gustafsson; Nils Kautsky; Kirsten Christoffersen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecotoxicology; ecological interactions; indirect effects; model community studies; toxicity; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis). 4. 4. Ecotoxicological assessment by microcosm tests on plankton communities

    Author : Pardis Pirzadeh; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; limnologi; Marinbiologi; aquatic ecology; limnology; Ecology; Ekologi; Hydrobiology; marine biology; musk substances; brominated flame retardants; structural effects; akvatisk ekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; mesocosm;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to present a short-term plankton community toxicity test in laboratory microcosms, with which the effect of the test substance on species abundance and composition of the community is evaluated. This laboratory microcosm is an intermediate between single-species tests and outdoor mesocosm tests. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fungal and bacterial contributions to decomposition in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

    Author : Margarida Soares; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fungi; bacteria; microbial carbon use efficiency; litter decomposition; priming effect; heavy metal stress;

    Abstract : Microbial decomposers process a great majority of net primary production in the biosphere and regulate carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. Microbial communities are extremely diverse and often disregarded from global C-cycling models, but one strategy to overcome this challenge is to focus on the major decomposer groups: fungi and bacteria.
