1. The regulation of muscle interstitial insulin, nutrients and blood flow in insulin resistant models. An investigation using the euglycemic insulin clamp and microdialysis techniques
Abstract : Insulin resistance, mainly located to the skeletal muscle tissue, is one prominent feature in thedevelopment of non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and further, associated withcardiovascular diseases. In this context the importance of blood flow for insulin sensitivity has beensuggested by regulating the delivery of insulin and nutrients to the target cells. READ MORE

2. Methodological aspects on microdialysis sampling and measurements
Abstract : Background: The microdialysis (MD) technique is widely spread and used both experimentally and in clinical practice. The MD technique allows continuous collection of small molecules such as glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glycerol. Samples are often analysed using the CMA 600 analyser, an enzymatic and colorimetric analyser. READ MORE

3. Insulin resistance in skeletal muscle. With special reference to interstitial insulin and glycerol
Abstract : Insulin resistance is a central feature of type 2 diabetes and obesity and is associated with cardiovascular disease. In insulin-resistant muscle, the insulin-mediated glucose uptake is decreased. The delivery of insulin to the interstitial fluid of human skeletal muscle has previously not been investigated. 4. Microdialysis as a tool for the management of diabetes mellitus
Abstract : Diabetes complications are the result of impaired metabolic control. A continuous glucose monitoring system could be a tool to improve metabolic control. Microdialysis is a minimal invasive method for investigating tissue metabolism in-vivo and provides a novel opportunity for glucose monitoring in patients with diabetes (DM). READ MORE

5. The human skeletal muscle in vivo : the use of microdialysis to study glucose metabolism and insulin resistance
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to further develop the microdialysis technique for studies of glucose metabolism and insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle in vivo and to use this technique to explore the effect of exercise on muscle glucose metabolism and insulin action. The first two studies were conducted to explore the possibility of using a perfusion flow rate low enough to obtain complete equilibrium between the interstitial and perfusion fluids and if the colloid included in the perfusion fluid for this purpose affected the metabolite concentrations in the dialysate.
