11. Nanotube Vesicle Networks: Immobilization and Transport Studies
Abstract : Surfactant lipids are an essential element of living cells. They are the basis for the biomembranes that envelope and divide cells into compartments. In addition to this static function, lipid membranes also play a role in dynamic processes such as transport and signaling. READ MORE

12. Microfluidic Compartmentalization for Smart Materials, Medical Diagnostics and Cell Therapy
Abstract : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. READ MORE

13. Droplet microfluidics for high throughput biological analysis
Abstract : Many areas of biological research increasingly perform large-scale analyses. In genomics the entire gene repertoire of an organism is analyzed. Proteomics attempts to understand the function and expression patterns of all proteins in a cell or organism. READ MORE

14. Micro-scale Platforms for Investigations of Biological Structures
Abstract : This thesis describes the development of innovative micro-scale platforms as a means to address the current challenges within the field of cell biology, and to provide an interface between miniaturized analytical technology and experimental systems for the life sciences. The work includes an analytical platform for rapid assessment of the viability of adherent single cells; a surface patterning strategy for investigations of cell-to-cell communication via protrusions; a versatile microfluidic probe in SU-8 hard-polymer, and a microfabricated millimeter-wave measurement system for the identification and characterization of niosome (non-ionic surfactant vesicle) constituents, which is operated in a label-free, non-invasive manner. 15. Polymer Components for Photonic Integrated Circuits
Abstract : Optical polymers are a subject of research and industry implementation for many decades. Optical polymers are inexpensive, easy to process and flexible enough to meet a broad range of application-specific requirements. These advantages allow a development of cost-efficient polymer photonic integrated circuits for on-chip optical communications. READ MORE
