16. Optical manipulation and spectroscopy of single functional globin-containing cells in microfluidic systems
Abstract : Recent advances in microbiology and biomedicine require development of tools to monitor the response of single cells to environmental stimuli under controlled physiological conditions. In this thesis, I describe how this can be achieved by combining various spectroscopic techniques with optical tweezers and microfluidic systems. READ MORE

17. Silicon Nanoribbon FET Sensors : Fabrication, Surface Modification and Microfluidic Integration
Abstract : Over the past decade, the field of medical diagnostics has seen an incredible amount of research towards the integration of one-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes, metallic and semiconducting nanowires and nanoribbons for a variety of bio-applications. Among the mentioned one-dimensional structures, silicon nanoribbon (SiNR) field-effect transistors (FET) as electro-chemical nanosensors hold particular promise for label-free, real-time and sensitive detection of biomolecules using affinity-based detection. 18. Novel Microfluidic Devices Based on a Thermally Responsive PDMS Composite
Abstract : The field of micro total analysis systems (μTAS) aims at developments toward miniaturized and fully integrated lab-on-a-chip systems for applications, such as drug screening, drug delivery, cellular assays, protein analysis, genomic analysis and handheld point-of-care diagnostics. Such systems offer to dramatically reduce liquid sample and reagent quantities, increase sensitivity as well as speed of analysis and facilitate portable systems via the integration of components such as pumps, valves, mixers, separation units, reactors and detectors. 19. Microfluidic and Molecular Tools for Genetic Analyses
Abstract : Methods that enable interrogation of multiple genomic regions in parallel are very useful for efficient detection of genetic variation. Two different types of probes are described in this thesis that can be used for direct analysis or for sample preparation upstream of Next Generation Sequencing. READ MORE

20. Miniaturized fluid system for high-pressure analytics
Abstract : High-pressure chemistry can be used to determine the contents of blood or water samples and to discover new chemistries. However, working with chemistry at pressures of many tens, or even hundreds, of bars often requires expensive and stationary equipment, such as autoclaves or chromatographic systems like high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
