  1. 1. The Francisella pathogenicity island : its role in type VI secretion and intracellular infection

    Author : Lena Meyer; Anders Sjöstedt; Siobhan C. Cowley; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella; FPI; Type VI Secretion; Igl; DotU; VgrG; Pdp; microinjection; phagosomal escape; intracellular replication; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Intracellular bacteria have developed various mechanisms to enter and persist in host cells and, at the same time, to evade the host immune response. One such pathogen is Francisella tularensis, the etiological agent of tularemia. READ MORE

  2. 2. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis studied in a living synapse

    Author : Helge Gad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : synapse; synaptic vesicles; endocytosis; clathrin; calcium; dynamin; endophilin; amphiphysin; synaptojanin; microinjection; electron microscopy;

    Abstract : Neurons in the central nervous system communicate by transmitting electrical signals at special sites of contact called synapses. Synapses contain neurotransmitter-filled synaptic vesicles, which fuse with the presynaptic plasma membrane. The neurotransmitter diffuses to the neighboring neuron and triggers a new electrical signal. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reciprocal interactions of neuropeptide y and angiotensin II receptors with a2-adrenoceptors in the nucleus tractus solitarii of the rat

    Author : Shao-Nian Yang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Neuropeptide Y angiotensin II adrenaline noradrenaline; clonidinereceptor receptor-receptor interaction cardiovascular control immediate earlygene microinjection quantitative receptor autoradiographyimmunocytochemistry in situ hybridization ~ ;

    Abstract : Neuropeptide Y (NPY), angiotensin II (Ang II) and adrenergic transmission lines in the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS), the major relay nucleus involved in the cardiovascular reflex, play an important role in central cardiovascular control. The present work explored reciprocal interactions of NPY and Ang II receptor subtypes with a2-adrenoceptors in the NTS of the normotensive Sprague-Dawley rat (SD), the normotensive Wistar Kyoto rat (WKY) and the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) by using a cardiovascular analysis, quantitative receptor autoradiography, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization techniques. 4. 4. Cytoskeletal mechanisms in synaptic vesicle recycling

    Author : Jenny Gustafsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Synapse; actin cytoskeleton; synaptic vesicle; endocytosis;

    Abstract : This thesis explores cytoskeletal mechanisms involved in the recycling of synaptic vesicles. As an initial step it characterizes synapses formed by giant reticulospinal axons in lamprey and defines their use as a model system. The most common type of reticulospinal synapse, "simple synapse", appeared to be most suitable as an experimental model. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cross-linked Profilin:actin - A tool to study actin dynamics in non-muscle cells

    Author : Staffan Grenklo; Roger Karlsson; Dan Lindholm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; actin dynamics; profilin; actin; Profilin-actin complex; Cell motility; synaptic vesicle trafficing; Far western; fluorescence microscopy; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The microfilament system, consisting of actin and a number of auxiliary proteins, is fundamental for cell motility. Its dynamic organization depends on receptor-mediated signals, leading to rapid polymerizations and depolymerizations of actin. READ MORE
